In the tradition of such genre parodies as AIRPLANE!, THE NAKED GUN, and SPACEBALLS, Keenen Ivory Wayans takes on the teen horror flick with SCARY MOVIE, a campy, riotous send-up of everything from the SCREAM and HALLOWEEN franchises to I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, CARRIE, and THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. In a small town, a copycat is reenacting the SCREAM murders, and local reporter Gail Hailstorm will do just about anything to get the story. The six high school students who ran over a man on a sharp curve the year before think the killer is out for revenge, but sweet and innocent Cindy Campbell believes that the madman might just lurk a lot closer to home. Cowritten by Shawn and Marlon Wayans (and four others), the script leaves no cliché unturned; in addition to the horror parodies, the film also spoofs such teen sex comedies as AMERICAN PIE and such hit films as THE SIXTH SENSE, THE MATRIX, and FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH. The film never lets up in its striking re-creations of classic scenes, and it never passes up the chance for a joke, no matter how crude. The young, attractive cast looks like it just jumped out of DAWSON'S CREEK, playing everything up to the hilt--and beyond. [More]

Reviews for Scary Movie
A parody of a parody, blurring the line between spoof and sequel to the point of pointlessness.
Among today's rude, crude and gleefully non-PC comedies, Scary Movie can be so funny it's scary.
The jokes in Scary Movie do everything to signal their arrival except call ahead and book a hotel room.
As usual with this genre, there's no story; the Wayanses simply pummel the audience with gag after gag.
Not only do they mix their upbeat parodies with a certain yuckiness -- but they also inject occasional social commentary.
It wants to rub your nose in nasty stuff. In fact, it wants to hose you down with it.
The Wayans brothers have admitted to watching up to a dozen different popular films to help inspire their spoof, but where exactly is the inspiration?
The whole cast of Scary Movie keep straight faces throughout, which is the right way to go. By making everything seem serious and real, it only proves more funny for the audience watching it.
Naturally, some of the jokes are offensive (while others just don't work the way they must have on paper), but many of them are genuinely hilarious and all of them are good-natured in spirit.
It's very funny and -- at times -- even witty in a crude, drunken frat-boy-with-an-epiphany kind of way.
