Although very hit and miss, Scary Movie is funny enough to be worthwhile.

In the tradition of such genre parodies as AIRPLANE!, THE NAKED GUN, and SPACEBALLS, Keenen Ivory Wayans takes on the teen horror flick with SCARY MOVIE, a campy, riotous send-up of everything from the SCREAM and HALLOWEEN franchises to I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, CARRIE, and THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. In a small town, a copycat is reenacting the SCREAM murders, and local reporter Gail Hailstorm will do just about anything to get the story. The six high school students who ran over a man on a sharp curve the year before think the killer is out for revenge, but sweet and innocent Cindy Campbell believes that the madman might just lurk a lot closer to home. Cowritten by Shawn and Marlon Wayans (and four others), the script leaves no cliché unturned; in addition to the horror parodies, the film also spoofs such teen sex comedies as AMERICAN PIE and such hit films as THE SIXTH SENSE, THE MATRIX, and FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH. The film never lets up in its striking re-creations of classic scenes, and it never passes up the chance for a joke, no matter how crude. The young, attractive cast looks like it just jumped out of DAWSON'S CREEK, playing everything up to the hilt--and beyond. [More]

Reviews for Scary Movie
Scary Movie is a good showcase for a talented, youthful cast, and the film is carried with aplomb by newcomer Faris, a fearless comedian and an appealing ingénue.
The big cast got the chance to adlib and put their own spin on their characters. The free flow of imaginative humor is evident here as the actors give their own personalities to their roles. You can match the characters to their counterparts in the films.
I don't care if this family breeds like bunnies, as long as what they're breeding is as funny as this.
Labored, Naked Gun-ish quotes from The Matrix, The Blair Witch Project, and The Usual Suspects merely congratulate us for recognizing them.
Scary Movie could be said to give rise to an unprecedented new genre: the horny horror comedy.
The first 10 minutes are its funniest, most inventive and best crafted. The Wayanses seemed to have stopped worrying about the quality of their work from that point on.
Just throws random episodes of horror flick schtick at the screen in no particular order, hoping the good gags don't land too far apart.
Scary Movie is destined to be remembered not for its laugh-per-minute ratio, but for breaking a barrier of crudeness in mainstream movies.
When it comes to pushing the envelope in comedy, the Farrelly brothers have nothing on those badass Wayans.
To get your money's worth, you need to be familiar with the various teenage horror franchises, and if you are, Scary Movie delivers the goods.
It's goofy silly humor, from the most graphic sex jokes you'll ever see on film to those old, tired, pot-head gags, to truly funny spoofs of the fright genre
I'm not sure whether the entire concept of scattershot genre parody is beyond my appreciation at this point, or whether Scary Movie simply made me feel like that was the case
