Ossie Davis: 1917-2005
The great Ossie Davis, an outstanding actor and noted civil rights leader, has died at 87. Davis was found dead in his hotel room in Miami Friday, Feb. 4; he was working on the film "Retirement." Davis has numerous television and film credits, beginning with "No Way Out," which also featured the debut of Sidney Poitier. Recently, he starred in a number of Spike Lee's films, from "School Daze" to "She Hate Me." He directed several films, beginning with "Cotton Comes to Harlem" in 1970. Davis was also known as a political activist, and was a featured speaker at the funerals of both Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Davis is survived by his wife, Ruby Dee, and their three children.
