Consensus: According to critics, Scream 3 has become what it originally spoofed. Despite some surprising twists, the movie seems to have lost its freshness and originality by falling back on the old horror formulas and cliches.

Desperate to escape the demons of her past, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) discretely cocoons herself in a remote, high-security ranch house in the woods of Northern California, where she works as a phone counselor for a crisis hotline. She's content to remain in quiet seclusion, but finds herself once again facing mortal danger when the masked killer Ghostface (named for the Munch-inspired costume) begins cutting into the cast of STAB 3--the schlocky series of slasher films based upon the Woodsboro and Windsor College murders. One by one STAB 3's stars meet grisly deaths at the hands of the psychopath, who--armed with a cell phone, a copy of the film's screenplay, and an arsenal of B-movie cliches--gleefully hunts down and eviscerates his victims. The killer's modus operandi adheres to the "rules" of engagement codified by the great film trilogies STAR WARS and THE GODFATHER, which dictate that in the third chapter, anything goes. Now Sidney must return to "Woodsboro"--recreated as the set of STAB 3--and team-up with cut-throat reporter Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox), small-town deputy Dwight "Dewey" Riley (David Arquette), Hollywood detective Marc Kincaid (Patrick Dempsey), and the remaining cast of STAB 3 in order to stop the killer before he makes his final cut. While Scream 3 is only an above-average film in its own right, as the conclusion to the trilogy it works more effectively than anyone had a right to expect.

If you want your trilogy to become a franchise, make something grander than Scream 3.

A bad slasher movie, made by a talented man who brought hardly a one of his talents to bear.

The irreverent, self-absorbed humour is tired. The repetition of bringing the old gang back to witness the slashing of newcomers is also tired.

The humor here is derived from slapstick and caricatures and the occasional semi-entertaining cameo rather than witty self-awareness.

Is Scream 3 better or worse than Scream 2? Hmmmmm. Is a greasy plate of week-old grits better or worse than a slimy bowl of week-old Brussels sprouts?

If Scream was like a funny joke, Scream 2 was like somebody telling you, 'here's how I heard that joke,' and Scream 3 is like somebody who won't believe you've already heard it.

Despite the various surprise cameos and cute twists, it takes itself too seriously and adheres too strictly to its formula to avoid becoming what it parodies.

Just a blur of blood and guts -- exactly the type of dreary mayhem that Scream was born to demolish.
