Eccentric author Mort Rainey (Johnny Depp) finds his life spiraling out of control. With a drinking problem and a cigarette habit he can't shake, Mort can barely function when his wife (Maria Bello) leaves him and he abandons his work. In the midst of his anguish, a deranged man, John Shooter, (John Turturro) appears at Mort's New York cabin, claiming that Mort has plagiarized one of his stories. As his wife pushes Mort to finalize their divorce and Shooter systematically destroys his life, he struggles to restore order to an increasingly insane situation. Playing off of Turturro who is superb as the crazed, Gothic Shooter, Johnny Depp shines in his role with a quirky, brilliant performance. The mannerisms he brings to Mort, such as a problem with a clenched jaw, makes the author's descent into madness compelling and believable. With an emphasis on character study over special effects, the chills provided by this film rely on skilled acting and evoke thrillers of earlier generations like PSYCHO and STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, including a shocking twist of an ending. The mystery in Secret Window won't be too hard to pry open.

...[only] the latest King thriller to be defenestrated onto the screen. The hack finale buried whatever hope I had for Secret Window to keep me from eyeing the door.

Has no story, no ending and no redeeming value.

If the material seems awfully familiar (and after you learn the ending, it will), it's as much Stephen King's fault as David Koepp's.

Naturally, the less said about the spooks themselves, the better.

Sadly, the good isn't as good as the best King adaptations, and the bad isn't as funny as the worst ones.

N'empêche une autre performance de qualité de Johnny Depp, Fenêtre secrète finit par s'effriter à mesure que l'on avance vers sa résolution

Unfortunately, an attention-grabbing visual style and compelling performances across the board cannot overcome what’s lacking in story.

The plot certainly has possibilities, but far too many of them are botched by writer-director David Koepp, who's a better writer than director.

Not the stuff strong thrillers are made of, but Panic Room screenwriter David Koepp knows how to ratchet up the tension and spring as many giddy jump cuts on the audience as they can stand.

Adapted from a Stephen King novella, the film lurches tiredly through the author's favorite masochistic-narcissistic fantasy, subjecting a woebegone writer to a gauntlet of abuse.

Secret Window is taut, credible, and thoroughly entertaining, and features another eccentric -- and uncommonly good -- performance from Johnny Depp.

It’s technically very well made, but the mystery isn’t good enough to compensate for Secret Window’s mild suspense and murky purpose.
