Trailer Bulletin: Exclusive Red Band Semi-Pro
Will Ferrell wants to give moviegoers a Semi.
by Alex Vo | December 21, 2007
Discuss Article
Semi-Pro looks like another solid entry in the Will Ferrell comedy playbook -- a sport to spoof, some amusing wardrobe choices, and (why not?) a bear or two to wrestle. But then comes this revelation: Semi-Pro's going to be Ferrell's first raunchy, foul-mouthed comedy since Old School. The studio still has the movie listed as yet to be rated, but we're guessing it's going to be an "R" judging from Rotten Tomatoes' exclusive, red band trailer.

Journeying back to 1976, era of poofy hair and classy suits, Ferrell stars as Jackie Moon, the man entrusted to turn his basketball team around and get absorbed into the NBA. Naturally, this means dance numbers, daredevil stunts, and anything else that involves Moon potentially getting mauled. The red band shows less basketball than the first trailer and more of Ferrell cracking wise with co-stars like Andy Richter, Woody Harrelson, and Will Arnett. Together, they hit on a variety of delicate topics, among them orgies, drunken basketball, and, ahem, post-game extracurriculars.

Click here for the red band trailer! Semi-Pro hits the courts February 29, 2008.

Enter the zip code that appears on your driver's license. My current zip code is not what is on my drivers license, so once I figured that out- I saw the trailer just fine. Speaking of which... it looks ok.

What I don't understand is, exactly who is going to be more attracted to this movie for its foul language than if it didn't have it? And who thought that cramming it all into the trailer was effective marketing?

"Folks, with this trailer, we're aiming for the cussin' demographic!"

Or am I gravely mistaken about the number of my fellow countrymen who have graduated junior high school, emotionally?

I like the idea that Will Ferrel is going for a hard R comedy. But this was a bit over the top with no payoff.

sometimes I think these guys have so much fun writing and filming and working together during the intimate time that happens when you make a movie, that they loose sight of the fact that inside jokes and good times on a set DON'T equal a quality comedy film.

No genre suffers backlash faster than comedy. Very quickly, people just get sick of you trying to make them laugh. This could have been a good trailer, but we'll never know. Why? Because **** Will Ferrell, that's why. And Judd Apatow. And everyone who makes at least one comedy a year.

All sarcasm aside, I think the strength of a good comedy...and thus, the ultimate undoing of any comedian...is unpredictability. We love comedies so much when we see them for the first time, but they languish on our shelf when we buy the DVD. And the second you can succinctly describe a comedian's shtick, he/she is done for. Carrey understood this and jumped ship for drama, where you can get away with a lot of pretentious stuff and not have too many people hating on your lame trailer.

We'll see if Ferrell has the same good fortune.
