RT on DVD: Final Futurama Flick, Pirates II, and Akira on Blu-ray
Summary
This week we recommend the fourth and final Futurama movie (Into the Wild Green Yonder), but only for diehard Planet Express devotees; otherwise, your new release options are rotten (Sex Drive, The Haunting of Molly Hartley). Horror fans, however, have something new to cheer about (Wes Craven's original Last House on the Left Collector's Edition, Dario Argento's Four Flies on Grey Velvet), as do those with more esoteric tastes (Noah Wyle as The Librarian in Curse of the Judas Chalice and Pirates II: Stagnetti's Revenge). Blu-ray viewers have the best choices of the week, with new remasterings to devour (Akira, The French Connection, Vanishing Point, and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage). Back to Article

jokerboy1991 writes: on Feb 23 2009 07:33 PM Man good week for dvds... I am going to rent Sex Drive and What Just Happened, I think I have those coming tomorrow. I love Akira and I still don't have it so I'll pick that up somewhere down the line on Blu Ray and the same goes for French Connection- I still don't understand why I don't have those. Maybe I'll pick up Vanishing Point if I hear it got a good transfer. I am still contemplating on whether to pick up Australia next week on Blu Ray. Also I think maybe I'll finally give into buying The Matrix box set on Blu Ray, not sure yet though. (Reply to this) |

ledawg1138 writes: on Feb 23 2009 08:39 PM I'm just getting into anime after seeing "My Neighbor Totoro", so I plan on seeing "Akira", along with a lot of other anime films. From what I hear, it's essential anime. I'd rent "What Just Happened", I'm not expectin' much. "The French Connection" is still one of my faves, but I already own it. Nice week for the DVD/Blu Ray market. (Reply to this) |

ARTaylor writes: on Feb 23 2009 10:10 PM I probably will get the new Futurama DVD since I have all the others. Though none have been all that great and certainly not on the level of Season 4. I really should see Akira. I love anime and have always heard good things about it. (Reply to this) |

vitajex writes: on Feb 24 2009 06:03 AM The Futurama movies were each pretty much as good as the show. The best was 'Bender's Big Score'. In re: Vanishing Point. I just happened to watch this movie about a week before Grindhouse came out. It's no masterpiece, but it is better than Death Proof... of course, a 6 hour video of a colonoscopy could potentially be better than Death Proof... There would definitely be less inane yakking... djcallender writes: on Feb 24 2009 07:59 AM Sorry to disagree with a few of you, but I thought the Futurama feature "Bender's Big Score" was just as good as the series and rivaled "The Simpsons Movie" as an effective transition to feature film. The series is one of the most overrated ever, and is far superior to Family Guy, that's for sure. Not sure what everyone wanted from it, i thought it was great and by itself was a really neat story. But to disagree with vitajex on one thing - "Death Proof" was cool, especially watching Kurt Russell go from pyscho-killer to whiny baby. (Reply to this) |

Gimy writes: on Feb 24 2009 08:29 AM wow, no love for Wyle and the Librarian? i actually like the series...its like a ghetto National Treasure. and blockbuster/netflix...ANYBODY who rents Pirates 2 out to customers needs to be shot. the "toned down" version should never have been produced in any format what...so...ever. its like watching Nightmare on Elm Street on the Disney Channel, half the movie can't be shown so whats the point (Reply to this) |

reavus4983 writes: on Feb 24 2009 10:28 AM In reply to this comment (#2340811) It's like watching the Olympics but they cut out the stunts. Seriously, the stuff they do in that movie...it's exhausting to just watch. Then again, nothing beats Evan Stone spouting off egomaniacal one-liners about his "twin hellfire cannons", so maybe there is some general entertainment value. But if that's the case, Pirates 1 was better. (Reply to this) |

lestatthevampire writes: on Feb 24 2009 01:04 PM Watchmen fans should see Akira. Visually and thematically they are similar. Whats going to happen to Planet express crew now? They always were my bright spot in the galaxy. If it truly is the last, it will be another reason not to get up in the morning... kudos to that entire animation team though. A great series with heart and brains. And robits... (Reply to this) |

rizzyh writes: on Feb 24 2009 03:32 PM Oh come on! Bender's Big Score was ok, billion backs was horrible, but the last 2 are actually almost as funny as the original series. I guess it's all up to people's tastes, but this quote from Big Game was priceless: Fry: Hey, is that a Hobbit? Bender: No, that's a Hobo & a rabbit.....but they're making a hobbit (Reply to this) |

mssk8erboy writes: on Feb 24 2009 05:01 PM JCVD is out this week? That i would pick up i've been wanting to see it. I'm going to pass on everything else this week, but i might rent sex drive. I personally didn't care for any of the Futurama movies, but I've always found the show to be hit or miss... more hits than misses though. To Jokerboy, definitely give Australia a go if you haven't seen it, i thought it was great. Although i also liked Romeo Juliet and Moulin Rouge. -MIKE (Reply to this) |
