Charlie, once a renowned concert pianist, now plays background music in a run-down bar. A sympathetic waitress there loves him, but Charlie can neither forgive nor forget his former wife's infidelity. His simple life takes a turn for the violent, however, when his brother comes into the bar one day with two gangsters in tow -- gangsters bent on getting even with Charlie for a past offense. [More]

It's my favorite Truffaut film, not because it's the best but because it's the most enjoyable.

The determined jollity of Georges Delerue’s saloon piano score, which later opens up to encompass a wide world of romanticism, sets the tone for Francois Truffaut’s audacious second feature, made in 1960.

Truffaut's form of self-reflection is ultimately a way of playing the audience.

Often overlooked, Truffaut’s wonderful second film stars Charles Aznavour, master of the chanson, in his only collaboration with the director.

An affectionate tribute to the low-budget crime movies that Truffaut so loved, and it's one of my favorite Truffaut films.

Like Charlie only being able to let his real feelings out through that little crate piano, films like this remind us of our love for film and the possibilities within even the most bare and irreverent stories.

It is a teasing and frequently amusing (or moving) film that M. Truffaut has made, but it simply does not hang together.
