Consensus: While simultaneously embracing and subverting fairy tales, the irreverent Shrek also manages to tweak Disney's nose, provide a moral message to children, and offer viewers a funny, fast-paced ride.

Set in a strange, colorful land populated by fairy tale characters, SHREK is a hilarious comedy that will win over audiences of children and adults alike. Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers) is a fearsome green ogre living in isolation in his own cozy little swamp. He is not receptive to visitors, and fends off the occasional party of torch-wielding villagers with ease. But when the power-hungry Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) turns Shrek's swamp into a relocation camp for dozens of banished fairy-tale characters (including some pesky dwarves, wolves, and fairies) Shrek's quiet, introverted life is ruined. Joined by the talkative Donkey (Eddie Murphy), Shrek makes his way to Farquaad's realm of Duloc, where the Lord promises makes Shrek and offer: He will rid Shrek's land of the unwanted visitors if Shrek will go on a simple quest to free Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) from her remote, dragon-guarded castle and convince her to marry Farquaad. On their quest, Shrek and Donkey run into a number of bizarre situations, and Shrek finds himself realizing that he isn't quite the fearsome monster he has always made himself out to be. Reinventing the traditional fairy tale adventure, SHREK features gorgeous computer animation, a unique sense of humor, and compelling characters--especially Eddie Murphy's lovable Donkey. [More]

Reviews for Shrek
A solid second outing by DreamWorks/PDI, with truly biting entertaining moments scattered throughout the film.
Excelente fábula que encanta tanto crianças quanto adultos graças ao seu humor ácido e ao seu visual impressionante.
Not coincidentally, most of the really good stuff here will go over young kids' heads.
...Altogether hip and clever, and the computer-generated 3-D animation is impeccably crisp and colorful.
Shrek isn't even as good, much less good-willed, than the more mediocre output of the Disney dynasty it wants so thirstily to topple.
DreamWork's irreverent feature-length animated fairy tale takes digs at Disney while one-upping the mega-mouse corporation at their own game -- making fantastic films for kids.
A delightful computer-generated romp that's every bit as much fun for adults as it is for kids.
Sure, there's fun in the premise of a self-conscious fairy tale, mixing adventure and satire, but the film really got me when it eased up a bit on the cynicism and proved to have a big heart after all.
A wickedly delightful animated parody about fairy tales and all those characters that we cut our teeth on.
The importance of friendship and true love are explored with unusual sensitivity in scenes between Shrek and Fiona and between Donkey and Shrek.
A movie that adults will easily enjoy every bit as much as the kids, maybe even more so.
If "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Little Mermaid" were banquets for the eyes and ears, "Shrek" is an out of control food fight that's so invigorating to watch you wish it could go on forever.
