After years of honing his skills on the vaudeville stage, hoofer Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) has finally reached the top and become a swashbuckling star of the silent silver screen. Then the self-satisfied celebrity has his confidence shattered when ingenue Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds) dismisses film actors as "shadows" without substance. After getting over the insult, he falls hard for her--much to the consternation of his costar, the sexy, selfish Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen), who wants Don all to herself. But Don has career troubles too. The wild popularity of THE JAZZ SINGER has studios scrambling to change from silent films to talkies, and Lina's shrill voice and Don's stiff acting left the preview audience roaring with laughter. There's only one way to save the movie and their careers: turn THE DUELLING CAVALIER into a musical, with Kathy secretly dubbing in Lina's lines and songs. But can they hide the truth from Lina? Reviews for Singin' in the Rain
There is a wonderful cynicism throughout Singin' in the Rain, with everybody either kidding themselves or pretending to be something they are not.
One of the highpoints of hoofin' history but, more importantly, an unadulterated joy.
It feels like it was made out of whole cloth rather than just being a showcase for its dancers.
My all-time favorite film -- I never get tired of watching Gene, Debbie, and Donald perform those incredibly exuberant musical numbers! A true classic.
The greatest musical ever!! A movie everyone should see over and over again. If it doesn't touch you, check your pulse.
Compounded generously of music, dance, color, spectacle and a riotous abundance of Gene Kelly, Jean Hagen and Donald O'Connor on the screen, all elements in this rainbow program are carefuly contrived and guaranteed to...put you in a buttercup mood.
A celebration of the grand tradition of filmmaking that was canny enough to know it was also the bell-ringer at the end of an era.
The restored version of the 1952 classic musical will have you dancing in your seat, whistling along, and wishing for rain.
If I were only allowed to own one musical -- and I love Hollywood musicals -- this would be it.
Singin' in the Rain isn't just one of the classics of Old Hollywood. It is also one very fine example of a genre that is almost banished from the big studios of today -- musicals.
