In Tim Burton's stylish, creepy retelling of the classic Washington Irving story, SLEEPY HOLLOW, Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp) is a squeamish, bookish 18th century New York City investigator sent to a small town in lower Westchester county to look into three mysterious decapitations. When the always rational Crane arrives at the little Dutch village, he finds that most of the townsfolk believe the culprit to be the Headless Horseman, the ghost of a monstrous Hessian soldier (Christopher Walken), who seems to be mysteriously tied in to one of the town's most prominent families. Burton's natural instincts for campy humor, combined with the hauntingly gorgeous technical work (Emmanuel Lubezki's cinematography and Danny Elfman's score included), collide to create a work of exhilarating entertainment and poetic storytelling. Miranda Richardson, Casper Van Dien and Christina Ricci help make up an ensemble cast that, combined with the historically accurate village sets and dreamlike magic of the haunted Western Woods--created on the largest sound stage in film history--makes SLEEPY HOLLOW a visually stunning, gripping, and, at times, chilling film. Reviews for Sleepy Hollow
Tim Burton should get a creative divorce from Danny Elfman and keep his girlfriend Lisa Marie out of his films.
[Burton's] vision of the ominous woods, the shadowy town, and its pale inhabitants give the film texture and bring it to life.
While you will rarely read the word 'flat' in any description of Ms. Ricci's screen persona, it applies to her performance here.
The horseman charges on, breathing life (from it's severed esophagus) into this sleepy and hollow production.
For all its impressive production values and an effective star turn by Burton's favorite star, Johnny Depp, it all comes together to be a remarkably dull movie.
Sleepy Hollow is a fabulous hoot, and you feel Burton's delight in every frame.
The entire film is an eyeful, an odd triumph of old-fashioned filmmaking.
The film suffers from tepid performances, feebly drawn characters, and a meandering narrative.
Without Depp's appeal or Burton's sense of humor and wildly creative style to buoy it, this script would play like one of those over-produced, under-intelligent literature plunders that TV networks run during sweeps week.
I find it utterly dispiriting that the talented Burton could think of nothing better to do with this astonishingly rich material than to transform it into soulless junk.
Sleepy Hollow can be fun, usually whenever the Headless Horseman shows up for swordplay that's better than anything in The Phantom Menace.
A stylish and imaginative screen adaptation of Washington Irving's classic.
