Consensus: Woody Allen rises from his recent slump with Small Time Crooks. A simple, funny movie, Crooks proves Allen still has the touch that made his name synonymous with off-beat comedy.

It's as if Virgil Starkwell (Allen's hysterically incompetent criminal mastermind from TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN) has finally gotten out of prison and is still up to his old scheming. Against his wife Frenchy's (Tracey Ullman) better judgment, Ray puts together a ragtag group of misfits, including a scene-stealing Elaine May, and immerses them in a crazy plot to rob a bank. But everything gets upended when their front, a cookie store, takes off, thrusting the Winklers into the upper echelons of New York's high society. SMALL TIME CROOKS looks like no other Allen film; gone are the black-and-white shades of Manhattan, replaced instead by the ridiculously loud shirts Ray wears and the perfectly garish furniture and artwork Frenchy accumulates. Even the Allen soundtrack, usually exclusively jazz, big band, and Dixieland standards, features "Tequila" by the Champs as an underlying theme. What stands out most of all, however, is the offbeat, charming relationship between Ray and Frenchy, two ne'er-do-wells who get to spend a little time at the top. [More]

Reviews for Small Time Crooks
Acting aside, Crooks ultimately succeeds on the strength of a wickedly hilarious script that proves Woody still has his funny bone.
Small Time Crooks stacks up pretty favourably to Woody's cinematic debut.
There are just enough Woody sight gags and one-liners for this film to keep its head above water.
Allen's first motion picture of the 21st-century, and, no doubt, one of his brightest and sunny in years.
A lighthearted romp that combines caper high jinks and social satire in an enjoyably satisfying manner.
What it lacks in weight and depth, it more than compensates for in enjoyment.
Everything gels in Small Time Crooks, thanks largely to the chemistry between Woody Allen and the remarkable Tracey Ullman.
Allen's funniest, least sour outing in nearly a decade is a small movie with a tidy payoff.
I wish I could recommend Small Time Crooks more strongly, but the truth is that it's a weak (bordering on inconsequential) entry into the director's canon.
