This acclaimed independent movie marked the feature film debut of director Susan Seidelman (DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN). SMITHEREENS tells the story of Wren, a 19-year-old girl from New Jersey who comes to New York City with a dream of making it big in the world of rock music--despite the fact that she can't sing, play an instrument or write songs. Once in the city, she gets a job at a photocopy store and, in her free time, pastes up photos of herself throughout the subway system with the question "Who Is This?" on each one. Much to her disappointment, nobody cares enough to find out. Among the many people she meets on her ill-fated quest for stardom are Paul, a sweet guy from Montana who lives in a van near the Hudson River, and Eric, a self-involved rock performer. Although she becomes romantically involved with both of these men, she finds Paul too nice for her taste, while Eric merely uses her for his own benefit. [More]

Susan Seidelman's feature debut, the first American indie to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival, put New York's East Village sensibility onscreen by examining issues of identity, desire and self-fulfillment from a distinctly female perspective.
