Brooks' chief insight -- good and bad on both sides, tolerance the answer -- hardly seizes the imagination, and the contentious climax, with Hudson carrying a wounded Poitier on his back, has every indication of being intended symbolically.

The Maus Maus, a murderous African cult, developed in response to the domination and oppression of British colonialism. Rock Hudson and Sidney Poitier star as boyhood friends growing up together in British East Africa. The two boys, one black, the other white, are raised together in Kenya as if they were brothers. But when they reach adulthood, their lives and the color of their skin lead them to opposite sides of the revolution. One man is groomed to continue the colonial enterprise while the other--refusing to submit to colonial rule--joins the Mau Mau movement. Tragically, their friendship is shattered by the racial strife in their country, ultimately leading to a final confrontation that is both poignant and haunting. Stunning cinematography captures the rugged beauty of Africa torn apart by the horror of racial conflict in this Richard Brooks drama. [More]

Reviews for Something of Value
Though the story is fiction, the film rings true, with a fair portrait of both sides of the conflict.
