Based on Robert B. Parker's book series, which carries on the tradition of hardboiled masters like Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, ABCs popular TV show SPENSER FOR HIRE ran from 1985-88. After its cancellation, four feature-length films were released which featured the same cast as the show. Unlike the series, however, these were based directly on four of Parker's books, CEREMONY, PALE KINGS AND PRINCES, THE JUDAS GOAT, and A SAVAGE PLACE, with Parker himself co-writing the first two. Replete with the one-liners that secured the books' popularity, Spenser trades witticisms with his imposing sidekick Hawk (a pitch-perfect Avery Brooks, STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE) and on-off girlfriend, Susan Silverman (Wendy Crewson, THE SANTA CLAUS).
