Sam Raimi Talks "Hobbit" and Dunst Discusses "Spidey 4"
It's been a while since we first heard that "Spider-Man" director Sam Raimi could be in line to direct "The Hobbit" for New Line -- and now the director has actually spoken about the possibility. In other news, Kirsten Dunst says a "Spider-Man 4" without her or Raimi or Tobey Maguire would "flop."
In an upcoming interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mr. Raimi offered words like these: "First and foremost, those are Peter Jackson and Bob Shaye's films. If Peter didn't want to do it, and Bob wanted me to do it — and they were both okay with me picking up the reins — that would be great. I love the book. It's maybe a more kid-friendly story than the others."
So there you have it: Sam Raimi would gladly do "The Hobbit" if Jackson and Shaye give him their blessing. Too bad Jackson and Shaye disagree on just about everything these days. But the clock does seem to be ticking: New Line only has a finite (yet undetermined) amount of time in which to start the production before the rights revert back to someone else named Saul Zaentz. (Did any of that make sense?)
As to what this potential gig might mean for the "Spider-Man" series, well, Kirsten Dunst is making no bones about her feelings: "Audiences aren't stupid. It'd be a big flop without me, Tobey, or Sam. That would really not be the smartest move." -- with "it" being a "Spider-Man 4," of course.

Sony's production president makes things as clear as possible (for right now, anyway) when he says: "Listen, we're making Spider-Man 4. Our hope, dream, and intention is to do it with Sam. But I don't have a crystal ball." Boom, that's that. So let's just all enjoy "Spider-Man 3," which opens on May 4th. (Or one of the other flicks. You know you have 'em on DVD.)

needles writes: on Apr 17 2007 04:14 AM One question Sam. Why in God's name would you even consider becoming the litter box for the LOTR's faithful? Surely it's not the money since you could do just as well sticking with Spiderman. It can't be you're creative urge since the benchmark and look of The Hobbit have been pre-determined by Jackson. And then there are the critics who already have the knives out and pencils sharpened for anyone who would even think that they could duplicate Jackson. It must be your ego because nothing else makes sense. (Reply to this) |

I don't know who she thinks she is but I have never heard of anyone going to a movie to see Dunst.... Movies where she had a first role (Wimbledon Elizabethtown Marie Antoinette Drop dead gorgeous Crazy/beautiful) aren't exactly blockbusters. I think that she's right about Raimi and maybe even about Maguire....Gyllenhad would be good too but most people want to keep Tobey.... (Reply to this) |

cgcbooks writes: on Apr 17 2007 05:00 AM In reply to this comment (#861830) Look at the grosses for X-Men 3 with a different director. It made more money than the second one. Tobey is in a costume for a good part of the movie and CGI. Dunst can be replaced easily. Spider-man makes money because it's Spider-man. (Reply to this) |

ChinaRises writes: on Apr 17 2007 05:31 AM Without Sam Raimi, the Spiderman series should definitly take a long break before revamping itself. The style of Spiderman has become so synomonous with the style of Sam Raimi's direction. When you look at his past super-hero movies like Darkman and Army of Darkness(I count that as a Superhero movie, NOT an Evil Dead movie), you'll see The Spiderman trilogy has Raimi's distinct characteristics. If they brought in someone like Brian Singer to direct a quik sequel, it would ruin the feel. The only director out there I could think of who could capture Raimi's style would be Peter Jackson. Maybe they should switch trilogies--it would be a great marketing move. (Reply to this) |

TomasSPAGHetti writes: on Apr 17 2007 05:39 AM In reply to this comment (#861831) X-Men 3 was also a hunk of crap, widely panned, and the worst of the series. Awful movie. If they make another Spider-Man, I sure hope it's not like that. (Reply to this) |

Beastmaster77 writes: on Apr 17 2007 05:57 AM I totally disagree with Dunst. I think the Spiderman series could continue and be very successful without them. Out of the three of them, I'd say Dunst could be replaced very easily. Just to throw my two cents in on the comments about X-Men 3 by the other posters: I really liked X-Men 3 and thought it was very entertaining. Sure it could've been longer and had more depth to it, but I went in with low expectations and was not disappointed. (Reply to this) |

Elixor writes: on Apr 17 2007 06:34 AM I know I could do without Dunst in Spidey 4. The other two might hurt a little, but I don't think any of them are required for a good Spidey film. (Reply to this) |

Defmonkey writes: on Apr 17 2007 06:35 AM Well I guess MJ doesn't die in spidey 3. Since she just blurted that out, I would say its save to say that She lives and maybe good for gold that Franco dies (c'mon *crosses fingers*) But she's easily replaceable. She is not in my mind a Mary Jane. Maguire might be a great Peter Parker, but if Gyllenhaal takes the reins I think it'll do fine as well. It would be more darker (or I could hope). (Reply to this) |

blank blank writes: on Apr 17 2007 06:52 AM i think dunst severely overestimates her value to the series... im sure she doesnt realize that many people (myself included) dont think she is that great of an actress and also, they dont come to see MJ, they come to see spiderman (they dont come to see peter parker, either)... raimi would be the biggest blow, but provided they dont replace him with a hack like ratner, there is no reason that spiderman 4 (and 5 and 6?) cant be made with equal or better quality. it's probably time for somebody else's vision for spiderman, hopefully someone with a more mature vision. (i think the spidey movies are very well made and it shows that raimi and everyone involved are being faithful to the source material and they enjoy making the movies, but in my opinion, the first two movies have just a little too much cheese for me... it looks like spidey 3 is moving away from this, which would be awesome) im sure audiences would line up for a kate hudson, jake gyllenhaal, james cameron/steven spielberg/ peter jackson spiderman 4. sorry KIRsten. Merlin235 writes: on Apr 17 2007 08:15 AM I had to laugh when I read what Dunst said. That is hilarious. The series would be hurt more with James Franco leaving than with her. That was ridiculous. Does she even realize a lot of people don't even LIKE her in the movie? Killing Mary Jane might be a bad idea, but replacing Kirsten might be a good idea. (Reply to this) |

arendr writes: on Apr 17 2007 08:31 AM i'm not sure why people beat up on kirsten dunst all the time. i hear people saying she's ugly. c'mon, how high are your standards? she's very pretty. but she's wrong here, although it's nice of her to stick up for her director. actors and directors change in movie series' all the time. it's nothing new, and audiences will most likely still show up. blk_ballard writes: on Apr 17 2007 09:46 AM Honestly, I've wanted Kirstne gone from the start. I am a real red head, and the real thing that bugged me the entire time was how fake her hair color was! I mean, they really should switch Bryce Dallas Howard, a red head who plays the blonde Gwen Stacy in S3, with Kirsten, a blonde playing a red head. Something doesn't add up here. Oh, and Kirsten is cute, but her teeth need some serious work. (Reply to this) |
