Campbell Explains "Spider-Man 3" Cameos to Maguire
Sam Raimi fans know they can always count on a Bruce Campbell cameo, so when the director brought "Spider-Man" to the big screen, there was fertile ground for the "Evil Dead" star to come in.
[Semi-Spoiler Alert] Completing the trilogy with a scene-stealing turn as a French maitre'd screwing up Peter Parker's marriage proposal, Campbell saw that the film's star didn't really understand the gimmick of his many appearances.
"The funny thing about that is that on the first 'Spider-Man,' I met Tobey Maguire," recalled Campbell. "And he was like, 'Okay, yeah, you're a friend of Sam's.' Then I showed up for the second one, and he's like, 'Why are you back again? And you're playing a different character. Why are you here?' And he didn't really get it. And then on the third one, he saw me and was, 'Okay, you're never going to go away. I see.' So he finally made peace with it."
And it's not like the filmmakers have tried to make sense of it. It's not like the fight promoter became an usher and then a maitre'd with a French accent. "No relation whatsoever. It's just whatever is needed to torment Spider-Man at that time."
As the former victim in Raimi's physically demanding "Evil Dead" movies, Campbell is enjoying being the tormenter for a change. "It's very fun to watch a guy in tights run around and get the crap beat out of him. And I know Sam loves to do it. It's just been fun to show up for this incredibly high-budget movie and just stick around. That's the fun part about it. And it's still Sam. It's still Sam. The budget's just changed, that's all. So we have a good working relationship and we fool around and come up with stuff. It's a great gig."

Bigbrother writes: on May 01 2007 09:42 AM That's it. Tobey's gotta go if for no other reason than he didn't know who Bruce Cambell was. Every actor in Hollywood should have at least a passing familiarity with the classic works of The Bruce. (Reply to this) |

Rockslide writes: on May 01 2007 11:16 AM I know they were just rumors, but it would be awesome if they followed through and Bruce became Mysterio for the fourth or fifth film. That somehow all these different characters he's played were all part of some stupid plot, because c'mon Mysterio always had stupid plots in the comics. He could be in league with the Chameleon and Tombstone or something. (Reply to this) |

zeromark16 writes: on May 01 2007 04:27 PM How did Tobey not know who Bruce Campbell is? If I were a big actor like him and got hired on as Spider-Man, I'd be watching all of my director's movies (in this case, Sam Raimi's), just so I know what's going on. Seems Tobey didn't do his research. That's pathetic. (Reply to this) |

Scarborough Fair writes: on May 01 2007 05:32 PM I agree with zeromark16. That's pretty wild that not one of those nights before filming the first Spiderman did tobey feel the need to rent evil dead 2 and see what this sam raimi was all about. sure mr. raimi has made other movies, but jesus christ. Mono2k6 writes: on May 01 2007 10:06 PM Tobey needs the boot for not bowing down and kissing Bruce's ring when he first met him. Bruce Campbell is the greatest. I highly suspect his involvement in these movies is the main reason why they have been so successful. And yes an Evil Dead trilogy revamp would rock if done correctly. (Reply to this) |
