Consensus: A kinetic and fun movie that's sure to thrill children of all ages.

Runtime: 88 mins

Genre: Action/Adventure

When the notorious husband-and-wife spy team Gregorio and Ingrid Cortez (Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino) is kidnapped by the evil Fegan Floop (Alan Cumming), the two Cortez children are the only ones who have the right skills and the insider know-how to help. Together Carmen and Juni Cortez (Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara) set out on their first spy mission to find Floop and rescue their parents. SPY KIDS is a high-wire family adventure that lets the kids save the day. Though director Robert Rodriguez was previously best known for violent action films like DESPERADO and FROM DUSK TILL DAWN, here he creates family-friendly fare that still shows elements of his trademark energy. SPY KIDS was followed by SPY KIDS 2: ISLAND OF LOST DREAMS and SPY KIDS 3-D: GAME OVER. [More]

Funny and exciting on enough levels that adults are likely to enjoy it just as much as the rug rats they find themselves forced to chaperone.

A preposterous collection of sight gags and lame special effects that doesn't amount to much of anything.

Winning family film that's clever in the best kind of offhanded way.

Meanders through an unconvincing plot that has neither the suspense of a spy film nor the emotion of a family film.

The children's thriller Spy Kids is just a glorified gizmo movie, but, as directed by the semigrown up Robert Rodriguez, the gizmos have a loopy, babes in toyland vivacity.

What's most impressive about this tale of pint-sized secret agents is how expertly it brings the action-adventure genre down to size without being the least bit patronizing.

Great fun, entirely uncondescending, with funky homemade special effects and a kid's sense of color, movement and general sensory excess.

Rodriguez makes fun of both adults and kids, but with a gentle smile.

Well before the 80 minutes are up, most parents will probably tune out, but the little kids will surely feel like they are inside one fantastic candy store.

Witty and hugely entertaining, Spy Kids may well wind up being one of the best movies of the year.

It's a big, extended live-action pop-up book that adults will be able to smile with alongside their own kids.

Like the speedy vehicles that can be seen throughout the film, "Spy Kids" moves at an agreeably quick pace, never letting up for such petty things as catching your breath.
