Rodriguez seems to have forgotten that making a spectacle is not the same thing as creating a sense of wonder.

The spy kids are back in this highly inventive sequel to the original smash hit. Once again, cinematic multi-tasker Robert Rodriguez (SPY KIDS 2's director, writer, producer, director of photography, editor, and composer) brings his high-octane, technicolor brand of antics and special effects to the screen. This time the kids are a little older and a lot more experienced as they fight to save the world and secure their reputation as the best in town. After proving themselves as top-notch spies like their parents (Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino) in the original SPY KIDS, Carmen and Juni Cortez (Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara) are now at the top of the new OSS kids division. That is, until they meet a new sibling spy team, Gary and Gerti Giggles (Matthew O'Leary and Emily Osment), and their position is threatened. In a race to save the world, the rival spies travel to the Island of Lost Dreams, a world that resembles the Bermuda Triangle, which is populated by fantastical genetically altered creatures, brought to life by the resident mad scientist, Romero (Steve Buscemi). However, on the mysterious island none of the kids' high-tech James Bond-inspired gadgets work, so they must rely on their own cunning and family smarts to save the world. Viewers of all ages will enjoy this delightful sequel full of tongue-in-cheek humor, wacky creatures of all shapes and sizes, and nonstop action. [More]

Reviews for Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams
Rodriguez crams in enough exotic creatures, fancy gadgets, humor and action to make the movie's contents practically leap out of the frame.
'Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams," is a wildly imaginative, energetic, colorful, carefree romp through a kind of magical gadget kingdom.
Rodriguez does a splendid job of racial profiling Hollywood style--casting excellent Latin actors of all ages--a trend long overdue.
Lacks the charm and wit -- and humanity --of its predecessor. It's dispiriting.
Proof that you can make a sophisticated, enjoyable movie that celebrates the intelligence of children without resorting to fart jokes or crotch injuries.
When the final credits roll, hyperactive preteens likely will be convinced they've just seen -- and desperately want to see again and again -- the coolest movie ever made.
It's miraculous that writer/director/co-producer/co-composer/editor/co-cinematographer/co-designer (whew!) Robert Rodriguez was able to meet our expectations.
The charm of the first movie is still there, and the story feels like the logical, unforced continuation of the careers of a pair of spy kids.
I didn't like the first one enough to recommend it. I liked this one even less.
A movie so joyous, so imaginative, so endlessly inventive that the instinct to cheer isn't easily overcome.
'Spy Kids 2 is still about family, but it’s mostly about living up to the expectations of the imagination, and with a monstrous sense of humor.'
There is action with triumph, colorful characters with attitude, exotic animals with feelings, and finally, a happy meeting ground for the entire family, complete with doting grandparents.
Another episode cut from the same cloth, if slightly more threadbare this time around.
An eye-boggling blend of psychedelic devices, special effects and backgrounds, 'Spy Kids 2' is a visual treat for all audiences.
Like the first one, this is fresh, funny, exciting, and brilliantly inventive, the best family movie of the summer.
Spy Kids 2, because of the fabulous special effects and the gadgets and the empowerment of children, should go over extremely well with kiddie audiences. Parents have less to tickle their fancy.
