Karl Urban Joining Star Trek XI?
Also: More on the Mike Vogel-as-Kirk rumor.
Add Karl Urban to the list of names being bandied about as potential additions to the cast of Star Trek XI.IGN Movies reported on Friday that a number of sites, including IESB.net and TrekMovie.com, have been spreading the word of Urban's possible involvement in the J.J. Abrams-directed reboot. Though IESB initially claimed Urban was up for the role of a Romulan bad guy, TrekMovie has refuted that report, saying:
It is not for the film's villain (nor is it for Kirk). The source would not go further when pressed, but based on the actor's age (35) either Scotty or Bones may be a good guess.
The article goes on to reference more of the TrekMovie report, saying that the studio is "looking for well known brand name actor (especially one who will help the film play in foreign markets). This fits with the report that there is interest in Russell Crowe for the part."
Finally, TrekMovie weighs in on last week's rumor about Mike Vogel having been chosen as Star Trek XI's Kirk, saying that, according to their sources, Vogel is "'just one of the people being looked at' for the role and that they are still mulling options. Vogel's publicist also tells TrekMovie.com the original article as written was 'not true.'"

on Oct 01 2007 08:36 AM Ummm.. considering they are still working on the cast, a trailer is still a long ways off! (Reply to this) |
![]() on Oct 01 2007 08:42 AM Yeah, I guess that's right, Eldorado. But consider the "Dark Knight" teaser trailer; It's all idea, and atmosphere--- you don't see any of the actors in that one, remember? "Star Trek XI" could do something similar. Something that "speaks the language" of the Star Trek universe--- with some cool slogan, and that hypnotic, heroic Star Trek music ("Tan--Tan--Tan---") and I'd be content for a while with that, you know? on Oct 01 2007 09:20 AM Doc McCoy might be better served by an actor capable of a straight-faced, smarmy charm. Southern accent is optional. Paramount will probably reveal Kirk's casting after the rest of the crew is signed on, considering how much of a tizzy that may spark in any Trekkies, above all else. (Reply to this) |

on Oct 01 2007 09:46 AM Speaking of 'intriguing,' I can't wait to read the sh#tstorm of controversy on websites like this one, nomatter WHO they pick as Kirk. ...and then there'll be the inevitable 'What does William Shatner think of ' feature.. (Reply to this) |

on Oct 01 2007 10:27 AM russell crowe in star trek? i dont know what the producers are smoking, but all this rumor mongering makes them look bad. when names like russell crowe, matt damon, adrian brody, and gary sinise are mentioned as possible stars, then you get such megastars as zachary qinto, zoe saldana, some russian guy, and mike vogel... it makes people think that this movie is going to suck so bad, that nobody wants to even touch it. that being said, i dont think you can rely on the star trek brand to bring people back to the franchise, you need a few big stars. karl urban isnt it. on Oct 01 2007 04:15 PM I think Urban would be great. He was good in LOTR and Bourne Supremacy. Ok, not so good in Doom and, well I didn't see the Pathfinder (I think he was in that). He looks a little feminine on his website too. But other than that he would be great! Huh? (Reply to this) |

on Oct 01 2007 04:23 PM Being a fellow New Zealander, I'd go watch Karl in anything...and he's really shaping up to be a decent actor after Rings and Bourne Supremacy...and I still remember him playing a gay ambulance driver on a local soap opera! And I agree, Christopher Pike would be the role for him (Reply to this) |

on Oct 01 2007 05:15 PM In reply to this comment (#1160432) jeanpaul; If you're looking for a cool Trek XI teaser trailer, go to youtube.com and find the one made by TrekMovie. It is absolutely stirring, beautiful and above all, brilliant! Probably better than whatever Paramount will do! Also, remember that for the Dark Knight teaser trailer, Christopher Nolan had already shot a bunch of footage, and just decided to go with dialogue over the bat logo. As Obi-Wan said to Luke, when he was in a rush to confront Darth Vader, "Patience!" ;-) (Reply to this) |

![]() on Oct 02 2007 02:39 AM Ok. Wow. Just saw that fan-made teaser from TrekMovie. I agree, thereign, It's very impressive indeed. I liked the "Generations/Nexus" music in the backround, very beautifull and touching. Yeah, I hope Paramount movies does as impressive a first trailer. Even this fan-made trailer certainly sets the standards high. (Reply to this) |
