Lets hope the casting stays great, and we don't get stuck with Ashton Kutcher as Kirk

I too really really reeeeally hope they find someone better than Chris "Princess Diaries 2" Pine to play Kirk. This is the freakin' captain we're talking about, people! Other than a super unimpressive resume, he looks way too girly to be Kirk. That said, I like John Cho and I bow down to Simon Pegg. No to Chris Pine!

Pegg and Cho are great additions... I'm actually looking forward to seeing this movie.
What's with the Zach Quinto hatred? He's great om Heroes, and if Nimoy endorsed him (like he did), I'll trust the casting. He'll be good.

But yeah, back to the matters at hand... Chris Pine? ......DERRRRRR. Wow.

That said, Simon Pegg is one of my favorite actors. I'll run to see anything with him in it.

WAIT FOR A NICK FROST CAMEO. That'd be hilarious.

F*** it, just cast Frost as Capt. Kirk. Then, we're set.

no joke...simon as scotty...you really think he can't pull it off then you are sorely mistaken...he's gonna be great...juries still out on the rest of the cast though personally Ashton Kutcher as Kirk...he's plenty hammy enough he might be great in the role....not!

this movie could be really funny...which might not be a good thing but i like when the Trek movies have laughs- San Fran Earth one with the whales. With all the news on the cast lets hope they actually can put together a good movie because we all know no matter how good the cast is it's the story that matters.

What I'm wondering is how revisionist Abrams is going to be given Kirk was supposed to be an uber-geek at the Starfleet Academy. It might be cool if the movie focused the transition from the "Walking Stack of Books" Kirk to the "Save the Universe and Have Sex with the Green Woman" Kirk as described by Eddie Murphy

Let's not forget that the past couple of installments were terrible. I just wonder if this is coming too fast. They really have run the series into the ground with "Deep Space 9", "Voyager", and "Enterprise". Die hard fans still supported this crap so the company kept churning them out. The franchise has not been known for quality as of late, and I think they should have waited a while longer for the bad taste to wash out of the moviegoer's mouths.

This film isn't meant to remind anyone of the more recent blandness of the last few Star Trek films and series. Fans are meant to see the first trailer and have the reaction envoked, "God, I can't believe they actually pulled a Star Trek film like this off." while a non-fan to begin with is supposed to witness the trailer and express, "That was Star Trek?!" Your not thinking in terms of a proper reinvention. Simon Pegg's casting as Scotty is a small glimpse as to the differences in the series overall feel. For all you know this could end up being a kind of Hunt For Red October in space.

Also, prior films had the restrictions of the television series, in some cases providing a rich background for the films and in others holding the films back from their full potential. This is a Star Trek tailored to be a hit film series from the ground up and as a result has a greater chance of becoming a well-known film series to fans and non-fans alike.

Simon Pegg is 37. Chris Pine is 27. Is Scotty supposed to be that much older than Kirk? John Cho is 35 years old. I know that Sulu is supposed to be younger than Kirk. On screen their age differences might not be that obvious. But, if they are going to make this a franchise, some of these guys are going to start looking their age sooner than later.

Re Star Trek XI
Don't overlook John Barrowman, the
lead in the BBC series Torchwood, to play Pike. That guy's perfect for the role.

They never really seem to learn from their mistakes. The backlash against Enterprise showed that prequels are bad news. You can't make something that looks older than TOS without making it look old. Especially something older than "The Cage," which looks literally prehistoric by TOS standards. So it won't really be Star Trek, it'll be Star Trek-like. And it will die a flaming death like Enterprise deservedly did.

Simon Pegg as Scotty...? So I'm guessing this is going to be comedy then it has to be when they cast the guy from Harold and Kumar too. Okay so they didn't want to cast Matt Damon because he was "to old" yet they cast Simon Pegg as Scotty who is exactly the same age and is going to make everyone else look like teenagers (which they are). I really don't know how Abrams thinks this is going to help the franchise. And the real Scotty is literally rolling around in his grave right now.

> And the real Scotty is literally rolling around in his grave right now.

He was cremated and half his ashes were blasted into space. The first rocket misfired and crashed into the side of a hill. For a few days, his ashes were missing in an episode that I am sure many referred to as the real Star Trek XI - The Search For Scotty. But then they found the ashes and launched his ash into space yet again.

So no rolling around in any graves for him. :)

Great casting idea! I really like John Barrowman. He is hot. I think he would make a great Pike. However, I am not sure about Simon Pegg as Scotty. I have only seen him in comedies and I don't know how he would do in a dramatic role. He was really funny in "Hot Fuzz". I wonder if they are trying to go for comedy. I think Paul McGillion would have been better. I would still like to see someone like Gary Sinise as Dr. McCoy. The rest of the cast is okay. I will reserve my judgement until the movie comes out.

I can understand the concern about Kirk, but Quinto as Spock? Perfect casting, he was the one guy I had in mind before there were even rumors about the part much less a real announcement. Reaction to Quinto's casting has been overwhelmingly positive, what's the problem?

They do NOT have all the major roles filled. Don't worry -- got it covered.

Lt. Uhura -- Halle Berry
Yeoman Janice Rand -- Renee Zellweger
Nurse Chapel -- Christina Applegate
Green-Skinned Alien Slightly Insane Woman Who Kirk Falls Madly In Love With -- Jennifer Love Hewitt

now who can we get to play the anonymous crewman who always gets killed with the landing party?

and yes, I'll admit right now that the first two -- as on-the-head perfect as they are and I am, it just ain't gonna happen

so Yeoman Rand: -- Monica Potter. She's got a cutey-pie thing going
Lt. Uhura -- Jada Pinkett-Smith.
