Star Trek XI Finds Its Scotty, Sulu
Plus: Kirk offered to Chris Pine.

J.J. Abrams' Starfleet roster is quickly filling up.

Hot on the heels of this week's news that Eric Bana has signed on to play the heavy in Star Trek XI, The Hollywood Reporter and Variety bring word of two more additions to the cast.

First, Variety reports that Abrams has found his chief engineer -- the role of Montgomery "Scotty" Scott has been filled by none other than Simon Pegg, the British actor best known for his work in comedies such as Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. The article goes on to say that the role of James Kirk has been offered to Chris Pine (The Princess Diaries 2, Just My Luck) -- an assertion backed up by The Hollywood Reporter. The Reporter also breaks the news that John Cho (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle) has been cast as future Enterprise helmsman Hikaru Sulu, a deal that leaves most of the film's main roles filled. From the article:

Plot details are begin kept under wraps, but it is understood that the movie chronicles the early days of the Enterprise crew. The lead roles remaining to be cast are Christopher Pike, the first captain of the Enterprise, and Kirk's parents.

Star Trek XI is scheduled to start filming next month, so we should be able to expect the last pieces of its casting puzzle to fall into place relatively quickly.

Lets hope the casting stays great, and we don't get stuck with Ashton Kutcher as Kirk

I too really really reeeeally hope they find someone better than Chris "Princess Diaries 2" Pine to play Kirk. This is the freakin' captain we're talking about, people! Other than a super unimpressive resume, he looks way too girly to be Kirk. That said, I like John Cho and I bow down to Simon Pegg. No to Chris Pine!

Pegg and Cho are great additions... I'm actually looking forward to seeing this movie.
What's with the Zach Quinto hatred? He's great om Heroes, and if Nimoy endorsed him (like he did), I'll trust the casting. He'll be good.

But yeah, back to the matters at hand... Chris Pine? ......DERRRRRR. Wow.

That said, Simon Pegg is one of my favorite actors. I'll run to see anything with him in it.

WAIT FOR A NICK FROST CAMEO. That'd be hilarious.

F*** it, just cast Frost as Capt. Kirk. Then, we're set.

no joke...simon as scotty...you really think he can't pull it off then you are sorely mistaken...he's gonna be great...juries still out on the rest of the cast though personally Ashton Kutcher as Kirk...he's plenty hammy enough he might be great in the role....not!

this movie could be really funny...which might not be a good thing but i like when the Trek movies have laughs- San Fran Earth one with the whales. With all the news on the cast lets hope they actually can put together a good movie because we all know no matter how good the cast is it's the story that matters.

KIRK: ..................... nah, we've gone too far now.

What I'm wondering is how revisionist Abrams is going to be given Kirk was supposed to be an uber-geek at the Starfleet Academy. It might be cool if the movie focused the transition from the "Walking Stack of Books" Kirk to the "Save the Universe and Have Sex with the Green Woman" Kirk as described by Eddie Murphy

Let's not forget that the past couple of installments were terrible. I just wonder if this is coming too fast. They really have run the series into the ground with "Deep Space 9", "Voyager", and "Enterprise". Die hard fans still supported this crap so the company kept churning them out. The franchise has not been known for quality as of late, and I think they should have waited a while longer for the bad taste to wash out of the moviegoer's mouths.

This film isn't meant to remind anyone of the more recent blandness of the last few Star Trek films and series. Fans are meant to see the first trailer and have the reaction envoked, "God, I can't believe they actually pulled a Star Trek film like this off." while a non-fan to begin with is supposed to witness the trailer and express, "That was Star Trek?!" Your not thinking in terms of a proper reinvention. Simon Pegg's casting as Scotty is a small glimpse as to the differences in the series overall feel. For all you know this could end up being a kind of Hunt For Red October in space.

Also, prior films had the restrictions of the television series, in some cases providing a rich background for the films and in others holding the films back from their full potential. This is a Star Trek tailored to be a hit film series from the ground up and as a result has a greater chance of becoming a well-known film series to fans and non-fans alike.
