The Borg have once again targeted the Federation--but this time, their devious plot threatens not only the present, but Earth's past as well. While Commander Riker, Deanna Troi, and Geordi La Forge work hard on the surface of 21st-century Earth to keep history on schedule, the rest of the crew plays a desperate game with the genetically networked attackers above the planet, matching former Locutus Jean-Luc and cybernetically naive Data against the erotically mechanized cunning of the Borg queen. Resistance is futile. [More]

First Contact manages to rev some additional life into the series.

The film feels soulless and hollow, despite best intentions to the contrary.

It has the melodrama of other episodes of the films but fewer absurdities this time around.

It is enjoyable. It is a must-see for Star Trek fans. But it is not cohesive enough to be a good movie.

The story is typical sci-fi fantasy, but the conviction of the cast--most notably the always-phenomenal Stewart--makes you believe and care.

For non-Trekkers, this is a great, free-standing special-effects adventure with much more fleshy characters than your average sci-fi yarn. Definitely a good ride. But there are also plenty of nods to Star Trek aficionados.

Star Trek: First Contact is one of the best of the eight Star Trek films: Certainly the best in its technical credits, and among the best in the ingenuity of its plot.

The franchise needs Patrick Stewart. Far and away the best actor ever to don a Starfleet uniform, Stewart is the standard bearer for a series which has the opportunity to thrive as long as stories can be built around Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

The first stretch and the home stretch are so filled with visual interest and, more importantly, with the patented Star Trek philosophical and humorous tidbits that fans will gladly suffer the dull Borg patch for the pleasure of the rest.
