Isn't it sad that these movies no longer sweep us away, but force us to sit making mental checklists of what George Lucas has done right and what he has done wrong?

Consensus: Containing more of what made the Star Wars series fun, Attack of the Clones is an improvement over The Phantom Menace.

In the second installment of the Star Wars series, EPISODE II--ATTACK OF THE CLONES, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) is now a teenage Jedi apprentice to Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor). Together they must protect Senator Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman) from a militant group of political activists that is trying to assassinate her. This group is led by the evil Count Dooku (Christopher Lee). Among other troubles, Anakin faces some hard choices as he begins to fall for Padme, knowing this love is forbidden by the Jedi knights' creed. In addition, Anakin begins to show his rebellious attraction to the dark side--which will eventually conquer him, when he becomes the future Darth Vader. The story is set 10 years after STAR WARS EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE, and there are appearances by some of PHANTOM's characters, including Jar Jar Binks. CLONES also brings back familiar faces from the original STAR WARS: the lovable droids R2D2 and C3PO, and Yoda, who plays a key role in this film. Lucas creates an impressive array of beautifully rendered alien planets and beings, sleek spaceships, and dazzling effects; he remains at the head of the class in terms of technical ability and visual imagination. The film's climactic final sequences show the magic with which CLONES' earns its place as part of the beloved STAR WARS series. [More]

Reviews for Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
The special effects are remarkable, yet somehow numbing, and the film only partly lives up to the promise in the title of Lucas's company, Industrial Light and Magic.
Christensen is a winning mix of sultry and sulky as the now older Anakin, while McGregor is finally beginning to relax as the mentor who understandably refuses to treat his moody pupil like a grown-up.
Is it as good as the original trilogy? No. But, as we move closer to understanding how these people become those people, it's clear that Lucas' storytelling powers are gathering force.
Consistently thrilling and massively enjoyable, Clones redeems Lucas' reputation after Menace.
Makes The Phantom Menace seem like one long clearing of the throat before Lucas could begin to tell the real story.
Makes The Phantom Menace seem like one long clearing of the throat before Lucas could begin to tell the real story.
Lucas has delivered new worlds, characters, and creatures but has left in little of the humor that sparkled throughout the original Star Wars.
I'm tempted to quote an evergreen Public Enemy song: don't believe the hype.
This didn't feel like Star Wars. It felt like a movie ripping off Star Wars. Something wasn't right.
It starts off briskly with some fantastic special effects and a great high-speed chase but then founders on the shores of bad script writing.
You will most likely end up sitting through this latest installment - even if the series has become a shadow of its former self
A riot of sterility, with planetscape after stunning planetscape swallowing up its characters and their petty concerns.
