Consensus: Containing more of what made the Star Wars series fun, Attack of the Clones is an improvement over The Phantom Menace.

Runtime: 2 hrs 22 mins

Genre: Science-Fiction/Fantasy

Synopsis: In the second installment of the Star Wars series, EPISODE II--ATTACK OF THE CLONES, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) is now a teenage Jedi apprentice to Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor).... In the second installment of the Star Wars series, EPISODE II--ATTACK OF THE CLONES, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) is now a teenage Jedi apprentice to Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor). Together they must protect Senator Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman) from a militant group of political activists that is trying to assassinate her. This group is led by the evil Count Dooku (Christopher Lee). Among other troubles, Anakin faces some hard choices as he begins to fall for Padme, knowing this love is forbidden by the Jedi knights' creed. In addition, Anakin begins to show his rebellious attraction to the dark side--which will eventually conquer him, when he becomes the future Darth Vader. The story is set 10 years after STAR WARS EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE, and there are appearances by some of PHANTOM's characters, including Jar Jar Binks. CLONES also brings back familiar faces from the original STAR WARS: the lovable droids R2D2 and C3PO, and Yoda, who plays a key role in this film. Lucas creates an impressive array of beautifully rendered alien planets and beings, sleek spaceships, and dazzling effects; he remains at the head of the class in terms of technical ability and visual imagination. The film's climactic final sequences show the magic with which CLONES' earns its place as part of the beloved STAR WARS series. [More]

This is a fantasy with no poetry in it, which explains why barely a frame of it stuck with me after I left the theater.

Lucas has recaptured and accentuated the elements that made the original films such a joy to experience.

While it was always clear that Lucas cared more about special effects than acting, here his lack of interest has produced phenomenally wooden performances from newcomers and veterans alike.

Just entertaining enough to warrant a bit more than a passing grade, the film is better than Menace, but not by a great deal and still has too many glaring problems to make it as good or just plain enjoyable as it could and should have been.

Not quite as good as you'd hope, but Clones marches in the right direction.

Bristles with excitement in every frame making this installment a high-energy adventure.

Simply put, the ‘good stuff’ in Attack of the Clones so outweighs the bad…that the bad is hardly worth mentioning.

The emphasis on computer-generated effects ultimately robs the movie of much of its energy.

Clones is more star chores than Star Wars.

Episode II is certainly flawed, but Lucas gets enough things right to give even disillusioned Star Wars fans new hope for Episode III.

George Lucas isn't going to recapture the magic of the original trilogy. It's just not going to happen, not with this series -- after Clones, there's no doubt.

At its best, it recaptures the sense of fun we got from the first movie.

Will it win new Star Wars acolytes? Probably not. Will it please Star Wars loyalists? Without a doubt.

It's dark but has wonderfully funny moments; you care about the characters; and the action and special effects are first-rate.

No screen fantasy-adventure in recent memory has the showmanship of Clones' last 45 minutes.

It's better than The Phantom Menace. But unless you're an absolute raving Star Wars junkie, it isn't much fun.
