Nelson McCormick Signs on to Direct Stepfather Remake
R.I.P. Nelson McCormick's career.

Apparently, Screen Gems was serious about doing that remake of The Stepfather.

Last night, Variety issued a report announcing that Nelson McCormick has been tapped to direct the new Stepfather, which is being written by Joe Cardone (The Covenant) and is slated for a 2008 release.

As fans of '80s horror flicks no doubt recall, the 1987 original starred Terry O'Quinn in the title role as a psychopath whose obsession with the perfect family leads to all sorts of untimely deaths (and -- not coincidentally -- awful sequels, including 1989's Stepfather 2: Make Room for Daddy and 1992's abominable Stepfather 3: Father's Day). In an interesting twist, it appears the remake will swap out the original's nubile teenage stepdaughter for a distrustful teenage stepson.

McCormick clearly has an interest in directing remakes of '80s horror movies -- he just finished work on a new version of Prom Night, which is, you guessed it, being handled by Screen Gems.

Wow, what an interesting twist!

I will be glad when there's no more horrors to remake. Why not just copy the story and rename the movie like they did with Disturbia?

Sadly, there will always be horror movies to remake. Once they run out of old or foreign horror movies, they'll just remake the remakes, and so on. Isn't that what happened to Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Fortunately, horror remakes CAN be good, as previously proved by the Dawn of the Dead remake.

Disturbia was a timely update of familiar story - it wasn't just a copout remake though - it threw in some modern ideas that made it seem all worthwhile in the end. Nothing that will change your life, but a slick little package nonetheless, and Shia is proving to be one talented guy.

"Disturbia" was a timely update of familiar story, I didn't feel it wasn't just another cop-out remake like so many others end up being. It threw in some modern concepts that made it seem worthwhile in the end. Sure, nothing that'll change your life, but a slick little package nonetheless, and Shia is proving to be one talented guy.

I thought the whole technological side of the film was pretty spot on - what would've seemed like Michael Bay-esque product placement in most other films, actually worked in the premise of this film, as it highlighted just how much teenager's lives revolve around junk like that.

Even if it is a "remake" in some people's eyes, I think it's a remake even more relevant given the times we live in.
