As in her previous efforts in this genre, BORDER RADIO and GRACE OF MY HEART, it's her razor-sharp sense of character and her eye for telling detail, along with the infectious music, that capture viewers' attention. Again collaborating with codirector/cowriter Kurt Voss, Anders shows a broad spectrum of characters on the fringes of the music business in Los Angeles. These figures include a washed-up trio of musicians--played with tongue-in-cheek charm by actual musicians John Taylor (Duran Duran), Michael Des Barres (Power Station), and Martin Kemp (Spandau Ballet), who are dealing with their diminished stature and trying to get one more record deal; a thirtysomething production designer (played by Ally Sheedy), who's stymied by her dealings with men; and Jade Gordon as a manipulative, talentless ingenue determined to make a name for herself at all costs. John Doe (BORDER RADIO) and Rosanna Arquette are also on board, with performances that stand out in a strong ensemble. The film doesn't shy away from the sex, drugs, and back-stabbing inherent in show business, but it maintains its humor and is surprisingly amiable. [More]

Breaks new ground in the way it so sympathetically looks at its loony leading characters.

strums a strong steady beat that might get you swaying, but lacks enough bass action to prompt a boogie.
