Bryan Singer Promises to "Up the Threat Levels" for Next Superman Movie
Why yes, he is planning on directing the Superman Returns sequel.
by Jeff Giles | March 12, 2008
Discuss Article
It's been the subject of more contradictory rumors than pretty much any other film in (or not in) development -- but according to its once-and-perhaps-future director, the sequel to Superman Returns is very much alive.

Empire, responding to reports from IESB, contacted Bryan Singer about rumors that he was at work on the follow-up to Superman Returns -- a sequel that, as Empire points out, "some said would never happen because the first was perceived as a flop." The director responded with a bit of (admittedly quite appropriate) sputtering before answering the question at hand:

That movie made $400 million! I don't know what constitutes under-performing these days...Look, I can understand, I suppose, what some people mean. Perhaps some people went in with the expectation of it being like an X-Men film, and Superman is a tougher character than that. Especially bringing him back. It really goes back to the fact that you can only please some of the people some of the time. But, yes, I'm just getting back with writers after the strike. We're just in the development phase. I'm starting to develop a sequel...with the intention of directing it.

Calling Superman Returns a "romantic" and "nostalgic film," Singer told Empire that the first film needed to establish the characters -- and now that that's been taken care of, the next installment will "up the threat levels." Tongue seemingly in cheek, he then went on to promise "a body count" and "unrelenting terror" for "all those teenage girls who found [Superman Returns] and mooned over" male leads James Marsden and Brandon Routh.

Why are there old comments for 3:10 to Yuma attached to this article?

I'm all for another Singer Superman movie. I agree with him that the last movie was a romantic and nostalgic film. The people who didn't like it will probably like a more action oriented Superman film, and I'd like to see it too.

Is this Superman or 3;10 to Yuma thread!? **** it being that were talking about something other than the article written above...can't wait for the Stephen Chow Dragon Ball Z! I've been saying since day one that he would be a great person to be involved in such a project! He has all the right elements to produce a movie like this! DBZ baby! let's change the topic again!!!

I'm interested in the sequel as well. And glad to hear Singer is still attached, despite what I like to call the Great Trifecta of problems in Returns (the son subplot, Bosworth as Lois, and *sigh* the bullsh it with the kryptonite continent). As for the erswhile dirt kicked on 3:10, feh I say. Great film.

what the h3ll?? how OLD is this? i posted...when wait, i DIDN'T post! creepy man...creepy.

anyway...if they actually have DECENT villians...this could be good, but i'm sorry comic nerds...i can't get in line and be pumped if Luthor is the ONLY villian, that just sucks. i like spacey, i like the character but it just isn't believeable. i don't really care who the big bad guy is in this film...as long as he has actual power...and you think he COULD actually win.

okay so now I'm THOROUGHLY confused as to what the hell this string is about...

I'm at least glad to see that I'm not the only one raising an eyebrow over the displaced 3:10 comments.

Re: Singer- I said it before, I'll say it again: lots of people said X-men, Singer-helmed, was ponderous and slow (can't say I agreed with them), but then look what he did with X2. Superman Returns was indeed ponderous and slow by turns and I agree with Mat' about the trifecta. Every subsequent time I catch Bosworth as Lois I long for the heady days of Margot Kidder.

I have faith, though. I think Singer could blow this the h#ll OUT.

Singer should stick to Marvel more specifically Xmen. Crossing over to a DC superhero while coming off of a Marvel project seems unsettling. IDK maybe it's just me. Superman was good but I didn't leave the theater feeling any different, didn't even rent at blockbuster. Can't wait for Sin city 2 ...didn't see 3:10 to yuma, sorry earlier posts.

I think the posting problem is just another RT glitch...love the new look hehehehe...

The second one will kick some @SS nuff said.

The first one really, wasnt all that bad....good story, good action beats, but only prob I have is the kid.....wtf???

Kill that kid, or pretend he never existed....what is wrong with america...

lets have supes identify with todays youth...let him be a slut who knocks up someone out of wedlock?

Other than that it was a good flick.

I run one of the major movie rumour sites and just want to get this sraight before i get the news out there (you know how these things spread):

'Superman: Man of Steel will now star Russell Crowe as Superman with Christian Bale as General Zod. The writing team are the guys that brought us 3:10 to Yuma hence the willingness of Crowe/Bale to get on board. Ridley Scott (A Good Year) is rumored to direct and the the story-line is said to be influenced by cult Clive Owen film, Shoot-Em Up.'

Correct?

The problem with Superman as a character is his lack of vulnerability. And is it just me, or does there seem to be a crap-ton of Kryptonite around for the baddies to use? It's a tired plot mechanism. He's a tired character.

They just need to bring in the bad guys who have gone toe to toe with Superman over the years. Brainiac, Darkseid, and Doomsday. None of them ever needed Kryptonite to kick Supes' ***.

Supes doesn't lack vulnerability he just in vulnerable in different than usual ways. And He can be beat they just need to show the real powerful baddies. Luther is one that knows how to hurt supes the most and thats attack those he cares about. I loved Returns. Though Lois did suck and Superman is now a dead beat dad that owes 5 years child support did throw me through a loop I still liked the way it came together. I'm tired to of the damn kryptonite plots. They should do the "Death and Return" plot.

YES, BRYAN SINGER is ausome. I thought SUPERMAN RETURNS lacked action, but it was an intro. I hope they use BRANIAC or BIZZARO. Im really looking fowrd to this, I hope they keep the original cast.

We all agree that the kid subplot was a colossal misfire, but we can't call Supes a deadbeat dad. Dude just found out that the brat was his. And what's he gonna do, go in a wreck the home, traumatize the kid with a big standoff against the guy his own mother has allowed him to believe is his father? "Stand aside, Richard! You are just a man."
