Five Favourite Films with Bill Pullman
ID4's President Makes His Choices
Few will forget Bill Pullman's rousing speech as the US president in Independence Day, but it's only one of a long string of vast and diverse roles that have seen him cast as romantic lead, action hero, comedy star and dark villain. In more than twenty years of screen acting he's defined himself as a hard-working, engaging talent.
His latest film, Surveillance, opens in UK cinemas this week. Directed by Jennifer Lynch, it casts Pullman as one of a pair of FBI agents (with Julia Ormond) tracking down the culprit of a grisly collection of seemingly unpremeditated murders. With a fine ensemble cast it's an original crime thriller; only Lynch's second film since her 1993 debut Boxing Helena. It will open in the US on 26th June.
Of his five favourite films, Pullman says his choices depend on mood and context. "I always feel like there are a lot of different types of favourites," he tells RT. "there are some that I look to for interesting things, some that I look to for acting things, others that I watch again and again. I don't know if this is in any sort of order!"

"This is always the first choice when people say they have a new television set or home cinema system and they want to watch a great visual movie. I always choose this because I feel it has an incredible presence."

on Mar 03 2009 10:15 AM I recently rewatched Spaceballs after years of remembering it as one of the funniest films ever made. It sucked, it aged badly and I'm pretty sure once one is mature enough, it just isn't funny at all any more. Just like all Mel Brooks films. ID4 stopped being a good scifi film for me when the Prez did his über-patriotic speech, talking to all Americans like it was the only country in the world. Again. I liked Bill Pullman in Arachnophobia. His versatility is commendable but he's not that great. A Jack-of-all-trades I suppose. Knows a lot but not really that good at anything. Meh. His movie choices are very different though. No Godfather??? FINALLY! (Reply to this) |
on Mar 03 2009 10:22 AM I loved him in Ruthless People. Not all Mel Brooks movies age poorly. I still think Blazzing Saddles will always be a classic (as long as it isn't an edited version). Movies like that can't even be made in this PC world. Don't forget that Mel has reinvented his own stuff for Broadway. (Reply to this) |

on Mar 04 2009 05:50 AM I agree with the comments about Spaceballs. I used to be convinced it was the funniest thing until I saw it again as an adult in the 00s. Oh, those simple days of youth... 'Zero Effect' was a good movie, it was just so under the radar. I don't remember even hearing about it until I saw it on the shelf at the video store.
