Witherspoon is Melanie Carmichael, a Southern girl who leaves her past behind in order to find success as a fashion designer in New York City. On the night of a hugely important show, her charming and romantic boyfriend, Andrew (Patrick Dempsey), proposes to her. It is at that point that Melanie flees for Alabama, hoping to take care of some unfinished business before Andrew and his mother, New York mayor Kate Hennings (Candice Bergan), discover the truth about her. The truth is that Melanie, whose real last name is Smooter, is still married to her childhood sweetheart, Jake (Josh Lucas), who refuses to grant her a divorce. As Melanie reunites with her parents and old friends, she is forced to reevaluate her new-and-improved self. In the process, she rediscovers a love that she thought she had lost. Tennant's film is elevated by Witherspoon's mere presence. Her rare blend of intelligence, wit, and beauty are a wonder to behold. Adding to the charm are Lucas and Dempsey, who portray characters who are hard to root against. [More]

Reviews for Sweet Home Alabama
If this is Witherspoon’s idea of a good career move, someone get this woman a career counselor, pronto.
Here is a movie that asks us to adore a miserable young woman who wrecks lives, treats people like discarded Biore strips and embodies the absolute worst side of metropolitan arrogance
Witherspoon is so unquestionably likable that it speaks volumes that Sweet Home Alabama can turn her into a grating ingrate who we neither root for nor comprehend.
'It’s painful to watch Witherspoon’s talents wasting away inside unnecessary films like Legally Blonde and Sweet Home Abomination, I mean, Alabama.'
...minus the vivacious charm of its lead star, the movie would have easily been a waste of celluloid.
Reese Witherspoon is such a skilled comedienne that it’s a shame that people seem to prefer seeing her in films like Sweet Home Alabama, which are completely unworthy of her talents.
Any movie with Reese Witherspoon may or may not have it all, but with her in it, it certainly has more than enough.
A hamfisted romantic comedy that makes our girl the hapless facilitator of an extended cheap shot across the Mason-Dixon line.
Witherspoon and her huge forehead really were pretty funny and this movie was much better than her last effort, "Legally Blonde."
It's as preposterous and phony as a Confederate C-note, but Reese Witherspoon has so much natural beauty, talent and charm she guarantees more fun than the day the hogs ate Willie.
Although the winsome actress is afforded the opportunity to demonstrate her usual perky persona, Witherspoon cannot lend her magic to this irritating and witless marshmellow of a movie.
feels disingenuous at the end when it attempts to celebrate all that it had previously made fun of
It's a fairy tale you've heard before, with nothing special to get your attention -- no zip, no snap, no zing.
