Witherspoon is Melanie Carmichael, a Southern girl who leaves her past behind in order to find success as a fashion designer in New York City. On the night of a hugely important show, her charming and romantic boyfriend, Andrew (Patrick Dempsey), proposes to her. It is at that point that Melanie flees for Alabama, hoping to take care of some unfinished business before Andrew and his mother, New York mayor Kate Hennings (Candice Bergan), discover the truth about her. The truth is that Melanie, whose real last name is Smooter, is still married to her childhood sweetheart, Jake (Josh Lucas), who refuses to grant her a divorce. As Melanie reunites with her parents and old friends, she is forced to reevaluate her new-and-improved self. In the process, she rediscovers a love that she thought she had lost. Tennant's film is elevated by Witherspoon's mere presence. Her rare blend of intelligence, wit, and beauty are a wonder to behold. Adding to the charm are Lucas and Dempsey, who portray characters who are hard to root against. [More]

A disappointingly flat city mouse/country mouse comedy that can't seem to shovel on enough stale redneck gags.

As she did in "Legally Blonde," Reese Witherspoon manages to carry not only her part of the film but also drags almost everyone else through it, no matter how far fetched or implausible.

'The story whipsaws back and forth between sentimental mush and outlandish cornball humor.'

I'm weary of being reduced to a stereotype. Being from the south doesn't mean I own the collected recordings of Lynyrd Skynyrd, re-enact Civil War battles, and have Confederate flag throw-pillows on my sofa.

With Witherspoon’s charisma and the infectious efforts of a supporting cast, it’s hard not to like this trifling little stroll down memory lane — but not impossible.

It's a date movie where you laugh, have fun, and walk out reminded of just how wonderful and magical love can be.

Despite her relentless vim and winsome facial symmetry, Witherspoon is just too dialed-up to be America's Sweetheart.

A light, engaging comedy that fumbles away almost all of its accumulated enjoyment with a crucial third act miscalculation.

It's fairly clear that the film is pressing the idea that country/roots is real and good, and city/relocated is false and noxious.

Entirely watchable and highly enjoyable thanks to Reese Witherspoon, and we should all prostrate ourselves before her as befits the goddess she is.

There simply isn't enough going on in the minds of these simpleton characters, let alone in the lugubrious plotting they're stuck in, to care about any of it.
