Although the script, adapted by director Anthony Minghella from the Patricia Highsmith novel, sometimes teeters on the brink of believability, the strong acting and Minghella’s directorial restraint keep it safe from any risk of plummeting over the edge.
The effect doesn't linger too long after the end of the movie, but the classy psychological thriller The Talented Mr. Ripley is a twisted, taut and terrifying experience while it lasts.
Minghella isn't going back to the modest style and the organic emotion of Truly, Madly, Deeply, his first and still his best film.
