Something of a disappointment, given Studio Ghibli's track record, although Le Guin fans can probably go ahead and add an extra star.

Like watching the back-story of Harry Potter's shy Japanese cousin.
It begins all at sea, and, figuratively speaking, pretty much stays there.
Miyazaki Jr has a long way to go before he can hold a candle to his father's work, but Tales From Earthsea still carries the Ghibli mark of quality.
Though not yet up to Hayao Miyazaki’s lofty standards, this sword-and-sorcery yarn at least shows his boy is on the right track. Makes you wonder what he’ll do when not strait-jacketed by someones else mythology.
Hardly a groundbreaking work, but still a worthy addition to the singular Ghibli canon.
Flashes of beauty and a fascinating subtext let down by muddled plotting and uninspired design.
The set pieces make this well worth watching while director Goro Miyazaki shows he's truly his father's son.
a seaworthy effort, both as an impressive debut from someone who has never previously worked in animation, and as a fine (if somewhat bewildering) piece of synoptic adaptation.
Trazendo diálogos ridículos em sua obviedade, sofre ainda com a falta de ritmo imposta pela inexperiência de seu diretor, só escapando do desastre absoluto graças ao esforço técnico de sua brava (e aqui desperdiçada) equipe.
