Sam Worthington Joins Terminator 4 Cast

With McG and Christian Bale inching ever closer to Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins' summer 2009 release date, the sequel's supporting cast is starting to fill in.

Bloody-Disgusting reports that Sam Worthington -- currently filming James Cameron's 3-D blockbuster-in-waiting Avatar -- has joined the T4 cast, and what's more, sources say the Cameron connection was instrumental in his getting the gig. From the article:

While the "Terminator Salvation" plot has twists and turns that are being kept under tight wraps, Worthington will play the role of Marcus, a central figure in a three-picture arc that begins after Skynet has destroyed much of humanity in a nuclear holocaust. A group of survivors led by John Connor (Christian Bale) struggles to keep the machines from finishing the job.

The article goes on to quote unnamed sources as saying "McG spoke on the phone recently with Cameron," a conversation that resulted in Cameron recommending Worthington to his latest Terminator successor. In Avatar, Worthington stars as "a paraplegic war veteran from Earth who's brought to another planet inhabited by a race of humanoids at odds with Earth's inhabitants."

On the whole, fans stills seem rather skeptical about McG's chances for success with the third Terminator sequel, but Bale's involvement and Cameron's willingness to provide input can only bode well for the picture. Right?

Hopefully the twists and turns in the plot aren't too extravagant. A good way to kill this movie is to force some silly plot twists that people won't buy. Sounds like people are selling on this movie already anyways. I'm very curious to see what happens in this installment.

I agree completely with Elixor. As much flak as this movie is getting (most of it deservedly about McG), I can think of few ways to reach new heights of 'suck' better than to try compensating with random plot contrivances. Going one further; we also don't need Pirates III-style quintuple back-stabbing and betrayal- that's where I think the twist is going to come from, personally. "Oh my god, you've been working with the machines this whole time you B#STARD!!!" [two scenes later] "Oh my god, you secretly WERE on our side because you just killed the machines! you RULE!"

What about Reese? When does he come in and how? Are we going to bring in older Michael Bien to perform the role w/ X-Men 3 type CGI to make him look younger or are we going to re-cast the role?

If we're going to re-cast, there was this actor in the recent Rambo film, he was a sniper-mercenary character who got along best w/ Rambo, and he looked a lot like a young Michael Bien. McG should snap this guy up quickly and use him for the new trilogy. Anyone else see Rambo and know who I'm talking about, and agree?

Shatter, the plot makes it sound like this is happening rather directly after the war began. Or maybe even before there was a "war" or a "resistance", just "sometime soon after Judgment Day". If we're really seeing the beginning of a new story arc, presumably Reese would come later.

If McG just keeps the movie dark, which I hope is what attracted Christian Bale to the role, it should be awesome. The Terminator movies never had a lot of twists, turns, and backstabbing. I think by plot twists they probably mean there are going to be a lot of near-death experiences for the lead characters as they try to survive and get back on their feet. One twist may be the possible introduction of a Terminator that looks human, the first one to infiltrate the human resistance. I got high hopes. And for the people that saw Rambo, sometimes high hopes are exceeded.

This movie will suck. Bale is just looking for a paycheck until the next Batman rolls around and Camron is not involved, he just recommended an actor to McG. They should have stopped the terminator series after the second one.

please don't say plot twists...I'M NOT LISTENIN, NOOOOT LISTENIN! i just have a bad feeling "plot twists" might mean they kill off Bale early for some stupid reason. the more i think about this, the more Bale doesn't fit with what it looks like its going to be. i hope i'm wrong and its an absolute kick2ss movie but i just don't get a "woo hoo!" vibe from a dude named mcg. i'm starting to get a little bit of a Battlefield Earth vibe from this though. ya know, big hype...big "trilogy"...then within a week of its release is a huge joke.

Well as long as Cameron has some input in the film it might have shot at being worth seeing. Also, from what I aleady know Salvation, and potentially the two sequals to follow it, the role of this new character Marcus will be just as important and big as John Connor's role has been in the first three movies. With that said I'm pretty happy on who they've cast to play him.

As long as there is a few CGI Arnies in the background for continuity sake, and some full on future war stuff kicking off with hunter-killers and nukes, Im in! I just hope it doesnt suck like a Granny at a plum eating contest, like AVP-R.

Show the material the respect it deserves, and not just a quick buck making piece of disposable, forgettable trash.

about reese. when he was sent back in the first movie i imagine he was in his early 30s or so. let's say 35 for argument's sake. he was sent back to 1984 from the year 2029.

judgement day occurs in 2015 in the third movie. and this new fourth movie is supposed to take place in 2019. so if reese was 35 in 2029, he should be in his mid 20's in T4.

With a set-up like that, you would really hope that the character appears in the film. presenting story elements like this correctly (ie casting an actor who looks similar to Biehn but younger than he did in T1) is a good way for someone like McG to show us he has actually familiarized himself with the timeline of this story and the overall mythology of it.

so far in his interviews, he has seemed completely clueless about the sequencing of events (ya know, all that 'stuff' that happened in the three movies he's making a sequel to...) so I have to assume we won't be seeing reese, at least not in T4.

I just looked up McG's profile on imdb. He hasn't really directed too much for anyone to criticise him. Sure, he directed the two Charlie's Angels, but they were pretty entertaining, and tongue in cheek, which they were meant to be.
We Are Marshall was a worthy first attempt at serious stuff.
Apart from the abbreviated name, McG, i reckon he's well worth giving a chance to. Especially if he's listening to James Cameron, i mean, he could have told Cameron to get *****ed, and get any actor he wanted, but obviously he respects Cameron, and willing to take advice, that's pretty admirable.
Let's just see hey?

McG is attached to this for more his visual style and less his ability to make good films... he's directed a bunch of music videos in the past, and though most of the songs are piss, the videos look good. I'm 98% sure that he's not gonna have a whole lot of say in what he's filming, they just hired him to film it.

In other words, he's not to Cameron what Bay is to Spielberg. Ok. I can dig it. We Are Marshal wasn't bad, anyway. In fact, after seeing it, I wasn't sure where all the hate was coming from...

All in all, making T4 a hit will be one hell of a way to shake of the stink of Charlie's Angels. Maybe then the dude might consider donning a respectable name.

I can only assume that you mean that Arnold is what makes the Terminator movies good in your mind. As far as the plot and story presented by the Terminator movies, for me there's much more to the movies then the Governator. The story and concept is a much bigger draw for me than watching another Arnnie action flick.
