Soon after, their small town of Hamlin experiences a communications blackout as the west coast is attacked. The local ham radio operator finds he cannot pick up signals from anywhere east of Iowa. World War III has started. The residents attempt to survive in isolation from the rest of the country, but gradually the radiation fallout takes its toll.
