Thank You For Smoking looks for laughs in a topic that is (literally) deadly serious. It finds them, and at the same time it also finds meaning.

Based on the wry novel by Christopher Buckley, THANK YOU FOR SMOKING is set in the fascinating world of Washington spin, where, more often than not, money trumps politics and morals. Aaron Eckhart (IN THE COMPANY OF MEN, ERIN BROCKOVICH) is outstanding as Nick Naylor, the public spokesman for Big Tobacco. The blond pretty boy has no problem whatsoever going on television and telling people that smoking can actually be good for them. He meets regularly with the M.O.D. Squad -- fellow Merchants of Death Polly Bailey (Maria Bello), who represents the alcohol business, and Bobby Jay Bliss (David Koechner), who defends firearms -- where they fight over who has the more difficult job based on the number of deaths their respective industries are responsible for. The smooth-talking Naylor's next big adversary is Vermont senator Ortolan Finistirre (William H. Macy), who is calling for the government to place a skull and crossbones and the word "Poison" on all cigarette boxes. At the same time, Naylor is sent out to Hollywood to make a deal with high-powered agent Jeff Megall (Rob Lowe) to get more stars to smoke in movies, like in the good old days. All the while, Naylor is trying to establish a better relationship with his young son, Joey (Cameron Bright), without playing down his highly questionable job. The strong cast also includes Kim Dickens as Naylor's ex-wife, J.K. Simmons as his boss, Katie Holmes as a sexy reporter, Sam Elliott as the former Marlboro Man now dying of lung cancer, and Robert Duvall as the Captain, an old-time tobacco chief who takes Naylor under his wings. THANK YOU FOR SMOKING is a very funny satire that will leave audiences gasping for breath from laughing so hard. [More]

Reviews for Thank You For Smoking
One of those rare dark, funny films that actually stays true to itself through to the bitter end.
A buzzworthy proclamation about an individual's freedom to choose, even if that choice we make is the wrong one.
It's been a while since we were last treated to a satire as biting and funny as Thank You for Smoking.
In the end, all the pic has left to peddle is its own amoral cleverness.
delivers a breath of fresh air to the big screen--92 minutes of quality satire
Wryly irreverent, this cynical comedy about a tobacco lobbyist is a merciless smoke screen.
Writer-director Jason Reitman crafted a satire as smooth as a long drag on an excellent Cuban cigar.
Bolstered by outrageous humor, Thank You for Smoking grazes the main players and bystanders discussing national welfare from their own self-interest.
[C]omparable to the great 1940s comedies of Preston Sturges, who took no prisoners while skewering the pompous, the powerful and the corrupt, yet remained utterly nonpartisan.
a comedy both as dark as a black lung and as illuminating as a stadium full of flicked lighters.
...rolls along at a feverish pace, with most of the cast hurling one-liners and bright banter as if they were in a 1930s-style sophisticated comedy.
It is almost as if the plot and character development are nagging afterthoughts, actually getting in the way of the satire.
Writer-director Jason Reitman doesn't just fire killshots at paper targets. He punches up Christopher Buckley's buckshot prose with invigorating ideas and grounded relationships.
Unusually sophisticated -- and frequently hilarious -- satire on spin-doctoring.
a film that knows that when it comes to the American culture wars, there’s enough blame, and humor, to spread around.
Well-made, but it should be harsher: This is mentholated satire that doesn't get into your lungs, much less your bloodstream.
a rare breed of incisive, razor-sharp satire with charming life lessons for the family
