In the twilight of World War II, Andrija, a kind, rather dim watchman, works at a quiet lake. Though Nazi troops are nestled in close by, Andrija's village has stayed out of the line of fire. Then Andrija meets Ana, a young female refugee, and her son to whom he gives shelter. Because Ana has no documentation, however, Andrija offers his further protection by marrying her. Later, he saves a potential drowning victim at the lake, the first such incident ever to occur on his watch. The swimmer, though, reveals himself to be a Nazi officer.
