A remake of the hit French comedy "Trois Hommes et un Couffin" ("Three Men and a Cradle") about a trio of confirmed bachelors who unexpectedly discover the joys of fatherhood when a baby is left on their doorstep. The three men -- an actor, an architect and a cartoonist -- share a swanky pad where they entertain a steady succession of one-night stands. This all changes when a woman appears at their apartment one day with the actor's illegitimate infant. Dad happens to be out of town at the time, so it's up to his two woefully inexperienced roommates to deal with the baby that has been abandoned to their care. [More]

Based on the French film, Three Men and a Cradle, this is acceptable comedy, but cinema it is not.

It is shamelessly sentimental, and could well send the hardboiled home to kick the cat.

Let me just put it this way: if you've ever had a baby, spent time with a baby, or been within 20 yards of a baby, you know why this is funny.

Director Leonard Nimoy does not use his ears for comedy -- nor his eyes, even. His three leads recite their lines as though they wanted to take their jumbo-sized salaries and run -- which, given this movie, maybe isn't such a dumb idea.

Simple-minded situation comedy, but undeniably appealing.

The balance of the film is devoted to milking as much humor as possible out of the situation of three urbane young men trying to play nursemaid with nary a clue of what they're doing.

As long as the script tracks the men's relationship with the baby, the picture is lively froth.
