Howard Hawks directs this classic about a jaded American fisherman (Bogart) who risks his life to help a group of French freedom fighters and a sultry young woman (Bacall) with whom he falls in love. The fascinating setting (Vichy-controlled Martinique during the Second World War), the source material (Ernest Hemingway's 1937 novel), and a screenplay co-written by a literary master (William Faulkner) all take a backseat to the on- and off-screen romance between the two legends. TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT is perhaps most memorable for the 19-year-old Bacall seducing Bogart (and audiences) with her lesson on whistling. [More]

"You know how to whistle, don't you? You just put your lips together and blow," said Lauren Bacall to Bogey in this entertaining follow-up to Casablanca, thus launching the onscreen (and offscreen) romance that made them a popular team in the 1940s.

It owes more to Casablanca than it does to Hemingway.

[Bogey & Bacall's] onscreen chemistry is palpable, all but overshadowing the fictional back story that made Rick and Ilsa's dance in Casablanca so memorable.

A química entre Bogart e Bacall (numa estréia impressionante) é motivo suficiente para que este filme se mantenha vivo na memória dos amantes do Cinema.

The movie is entertaining in its own right, and representative of the era in which it was produced, but, aside from the legendary interaction between Bogart and Lauren Bacall, there are only moderate reasons to recommend the film.

The scenes between Bogart and Bacall are so dazzlingly about attraction and sex that they encapsulate the whole magic of movies.

The movie is basically a rip-off of “Casablanca,” but it’s got some marvelous dialogue and great intrigue.

The film was Bacall’s first movie and the project on which she and Bogart met. Their love scenes couldn’t be any spicier.

As the hard-boiled professional fisherman who gives his ample ingenuity to a cause, Mr. Bogart is almost as impressive as he was as Rick, the Casablanca host.
