From the opening animated title sequence to the vulgarities at the film's climax, Gregory Poirer's directing debut is an obnoxiously funny comedy with a sharp romantic edge flowering beneath its T&A exterior. The plot surrounds a "kitty" (double entendre intended), created by a group of swinging pals determined to stave off marriage at all costs, with the cash headed towards whoever stays single the longest. Seven years later, only two of the friends remain single, and the pot is up to a half million in cash. When one of the two singles, Michael Delaney (Jerry O'Connell), runs afoul of the Las Vegas gambling mafia on account of a big-breasted babe, he needs that kitty cash desperately. Michael attempts to con his competitor, Kyle Brenner (Jake Busey), into marrying the wildly attractive policewoman Natalie (Shannon Elizabeth), who holds a personal vendetta against Kyle. But the best laid plans begin to run afoul when Natalie and Michael fall for each other instead. Filled with totally gross sex gags, pot shots at other films, and slapstick humor, TOMCATS is a humorous take on adult men who have not outgrown their adolescent mentalities about love, sex, and relationships. Reviews for Tomcats
Of course, we expect such films to be tasteless. That's their job. But that doesn't forgive them for being more abusive than bawdy or more sleazy than kinky.
It's hard to recall a recent film that was so ineptly directed, written and acted.
I cannot squander another of my precious few moments upon this earth enduring sophomoric attempts to make the human penis funny.
At times, it doesn't seem like movies can achieve any further debasement in the gross-out sweepstakes. And then along comes Tomcats.
Tomcats is so sloppy that Gregory Poirier, who wrote and directed, apparently couldn't be bothered to pick up a dictionary to double-check his own ignorance.
This is the first movie of this genre that I can recall that actually hates women.
The film is enthusiastically vulgar but not particularly funny, perhaps because it too often loses the distinction between gross-out humor and the merely gross.
There's nothing particularly groundbreaking about Tomcats, but it's still a fun way to spend 90 minutes -- at least if you enjoy cheap laughs and predictable fluff.
Tomcats seems obsessed not by offering viewers a good time, but by trying to out-gross its predecessors.
There's almost no nudity in this movie; one shot of O'Connell's naked ass and no Elizabeth whatsoever. So, if that's what was going through your one-track mind, then forget it.
