After Tommy (Chris Farley) barely graduates from college, he returns home to the Midwest where his father (Brian Dennehy), the owner of an auto parts factory, immediately employs his dumber-than-dumb son. While Tommy was away at school, his father had fallen in love with a beautiful woman (Bo Derek) and now desires to marry her. During the wedding ceremony, however, Tommy's dad tragically dies from a heart attack, which puts the company's--and its 300 employees'--future at stake. It is up to Tommy to use any available intelligence to keep his father's factory from going under. This road comedy uses the seriously comedic chemistry between the late Farley and his SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE buddy David Spade to brilliant effect. [More]

Against the odds of a feeble script and uninspired direction the duo do, in fact, grow on you, and there are a smattering of silly laughs.

Inane and tasteless comedy of obesity and incompetence.

It's some indication of the wit involved that Farley is reduced to cracking fat jokes at his own expense.

Farley and Spade have a definite chemistry, and they do their best to pick up the slack. [Blu-ray]

There’s nothing to grasp, nothing that gives off that good feeling of enjoying a comedy.

It's not high art -- but it IS pretty damn funny, and sometimes that's more than good enough.

Tommy Boy unspools just as you expect it to, and the comedy is as unrewarding as the story

A bone-headed farce that embraces its banality with sheer jubilation. Farley and Spade bring their inspired and nutty SNL antics to frenzied form.

The most peculiar aspect of the movie is that some of it is played straight.
