Allen Keeps "Toy Story 3" Secret...Kind of
by Scott Weinberg | February 12, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
We know that "Toy Story 3" is underway (with a new director and a script by "Little Miss Sunshine" scribe Michael Arndt), but is star Tim Allen on board?

It's surprising that anyone would think "Toy Story 3" is a big secret. During the Disney/Pixar talks, one of the major chips was "Toy Story" sequels, with Disney withholding the rights, Pixar or no. Now that the studios have made up, Pixar all but confirmed they were taking control of the further adventures of Buzz and Woody. So why is actor Tim Allen under a gag order?

"Disney would like us not to talk, for some reason, even though it was in the Wall Street Journal, they'd like us not to talk about 'T3,'" he said.

Being a comedian, Allen would not let studio politics stop him from cracking us up, so he just did the old mumble/cough trick to confirm that he was at work laying down voice tracks. "I don't know what it was. It just was 'Stop talking about it' but it's [mumbles/coughs]."

You had to be there.

"Toy Story 3" is set as a 2009 release, and will be helmed by "Toy Story 2," "Monsters, Inc." and "Finding Nemo" co-director Lee Unkrich.

I highly doubt they could dish out anything better than Toy Story 2.

Same, but I still feel like Toy Story needs one more. I want to know what happens to them when Andy grows up (and hopefully the movie will cover that).

Toy Story 2 is a classic. It's not my favorite Pixar film(that would be either The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, or Monsters Inc. . . . depending on my frame of mind), but it's a great one nevertheless.

I just feel bad because I can imagine what's going on behind the scenes, how Disney pressured Pixar with plans to do a Disney-"Toy Story" . . . and now I wonder if "Toy Story 3" was something that Pixar really even wanted to do.

Pixar is a small, very creative company, and despite some recent perks and fine print to the contract, their buy-out by Disney means that there will be heavy financial pressures/expectations levied on them. "Cars" is already considered a financial disappointment by Disney, and while it is Pixar's weakest film(next to "A Bug's Life"), that shouldn't influence decisions regarding future films that they choose to make.

Pixar is like the genius little brother to Disney's bossy big Brother, except that Big Brother is a knucklehead.

Disney may not have the creative juice that Pixar has, but they definitely have the financial savvy and the clout to keep the money rolling in. Whether or not the movies they create (or coerce their "little brothers" to make) are inspired doesn't matter -- what matters is the EPS. Given their recent filings, I'd say Disney is doing several things correctly -- whether that will continue, who knows (though given their acquisition of PIXAR, I'd say they're headed in the right direction).

That's cool that Arndt is writing it.

Well, considering the writer is the guy who wrote Little Miss Sunshine, i kinda have a more positive view on the project, and it should be really funny.

My guess is that it will wind up being a lot like Star Wars. Amazing first movie (That's referring to A New Hope, NOT Phantom Menace), debatably better second film, and third film that's good, but not exactly 1 or 2 either. I do think they have something in store for the part 3, and I'm happy they're making it, and taking the time it needs, but lets face it, the same characters and premise can only produce a certain amount of classics, and I just wonder if there's enough left in the Toy Story tank to crank out another 1.5-2 hours worth of perfect material. It could be as good as it possibly can be, and still fall short simply by that.
