Bay Prepares to Fake Out Transformers Fanboys
by Fred Topel | November 10, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

Michael Bay went through the wringer with the fanboys on Transformers. He addressed every concern -- early designs, scripts, remaining faithful to the source material -- and delivered a movie that won over most audiences, grossing nearly $320 million in America alone. But with Transformers 2 in development, Bay isn't taking any more lip service. Back to Article

Give the actual Transformers center stage this time. Bring back Jazz. Bring in Wheeljack. Give the Decepticons some screen time, etc, etc. And a word to the wise: if human weapons are effective against the Decepticons, then maybe the Autobots' weapons should be also be effective against them. Just a thought.

Megan Fox nude seen with galvatron? LOL!!! -- and Shea and Optimus Prime havin' a heartbreak? We already got the script -- the tag line could be "A violent love story between a woman and machine". Shea is pissed 'coz the highschool sweetheart he's supposed to bang is banging everyone else but Shea. So he calls his old friend -- the terminator. Now the terminator and human are on the one side and transformers on the other. To make the matter worse, Megatron is resurrected. He wants to destroy both of them. LOL. Final battle between the MAN and the MACHINE. Now Imagine that...

And of course it's RATED R.

They're going to get a lot of script treatments that they think are going to be the script. They will never see the script. We've got scripts and treatments written up that we're going to leak. Hire a real director. Someone who doesn't equate spastically jerking the camera around with technique. Relegate Bay to stunt coordinator, where he can spend his time doing what he does best - thinking of ways to blow **** up. Find a plot that's actually about, you know, the Transformers. Cut out all the crap with pointless hackers and government coverups and all that standard Bay junk. Gigantic robots hellbent on kicking the **** out of each other is cool. Give us that. Give us exactly that. And film them in a way that we can actually tell what they're doing.

I know everyone here hates Michael Bay, great, we here from you every time his name comes up. I enjoyed Transformers, it was everything I expected it to be. I was a bit wary of all the hype surrounding Shia, but in the end I thought he was perfect. Was the movie perfect? No, but it was fun.

I would love to see the Constructicons and Dinobots in the sequel, that would be fun too. I don't quite see how Dinobots could realistically be worked into the story, but maybe Grimlock alone could somehow be worked in. Maybe if he had reached the planet after the energon cube arrived hundreds of millions of years ago and took the t-rex form and was just recently discovered. I'm sure they'll do something like that.

Here's betting that each of them is better than the official shooting script.

I hear that it was Bay's idea to have Bumblebee take a leak on John Turturro. Figures that such an immature scene would be the brainchild of a man-boy like Bay. Whatever. F*** Transformers. F*** Shia "I got the part because I'm Steven Spielberg's friend" Lebouf. F*** that soul-dead streetwalker looking floozy Megan Fox. And, especially, f*** all the fanboys who whined about the film all the way up until its release, but went to see it on opening day any Goddamn way. You people are the worst of all.

Transformers was an incredibly enjoyable action film made by a guy who can ONLY make action flicks- and did a pretty good job. I knew I wasn't going into an Academy Award worthy (except Visual Effects and Sound) 2.5 hours that would make me change my belief on the whole nature of the world. If you go into a movie knowing what you should expect, then it will be much better. Stop bashing Bay for doing what he does best, and while it chokes me to say it, he did it pretty f***ing good on this one.

First off, while it could have been worse- how can anyone claim Bay remained faithful to the source material?!?!

Optimus prime bares resemblance to previous versions, these robots do transform, otherwise details carried over from the source material are not exceptionally faithful.

Big question though is this, given the writers strike, who exactly is going to write all these fake scripts? Michael Bay, or his production assistants? I'm still not sure how exactly they managed to pen a finished script for this movie in the one month after they were hired to write it while doing scripts and rewrites for 3 other movies at the same time. Unless these suposedly striking writers are actually secretly writing right now, I'm going to guess the quality of the script they're going to turn lose on us this time will be significantly worse than last time around.

Transformers should never be rated R, and Sam/Spike is integral to the mythos. Shia did okay, but they need to cut out all the stupid comedy and any masturbation dialogue. Megan Fox is nice to look at, but her character is annoying and unnecessary. We need more hot robot-on-robot action, period. No more, no less. We don't need more humans.

But of course, Bay is a self-important dick, so he'll never deviate from any of the stupidity of the first one.

Seems like a lot of wasted time, but I don't think people appreciate the respect that this shows for the enthusiasts (aka fanboys) on the web. It might seem devious, but it adds to the fun of it all. Bay doesn't have to even acknowledge the fanboys because he knows the movie will make millions whether they approve or not. It seems silly to have fake scripts, but it just shows that Bay cares about the film.

Personally, I never understood why people would want to know the whole movie anyhow before they see it. To his their own, I guess.

The best part about Transformers was the fact that people complained about Michael Bay directing a movie that is based on a cartoon that was made for the sole purpose of selling toys.

Yes, let's debate the merits of Bay's interpretation and get upset when he does not remain faithful to the source material (read: 30 minute commercials) and instead just makes a movie to rake in the money. What betrayal!

Shia has great skills and will be a very successful actor. Don't mistake good comic timing for character type. Seems like someone here holds a prejudice towards a guy who got his start on a Disney show. I think Bay's doing a good thing in leaking misinformation for punks who take pleasure in leaking the story of a film before it's completed.
What a way to harm the fruit of hard work of the creators as well as the excitment and anticipation for the fans. I've singed enough NDAs to know the damage that can be caused by unscrupulous individuals. Bay's not the prick, other way around. I say put all that spare time and passion into something constructive. Get really good at something useful in the film industry. Or a bona fide critic.

I've actually found that it's quite good on DVD if I just watch the 20 minutes of the movie where the robots actually fight with the language turned to french so I don't have to listen to any of the dialogue. After about the second viewing I could also follow what was going on in the final battle scene. It no longer seemed incomprehensible.

ILM did a great job.

I'm looking forward to the next one's DVD release for more than it's theatrical run. :P

P.S. I do wonder if Michael Bay realizes just how funny it is that every time Iron Hide goes anywhere he does a bunch of summersault rolls. Because no one can hit you when you're summersaulting.

Here are two points for everyone's consideration.

1. The film you see does not reflect the talent of the screenwriter. You all know this. When there's a writer you like attached to a movie you hate, it seems easy to remember to scream about interfering studio morons. But at all other times, you go to imdb to look up a writer, recall the movie you saw, and decide the writer is to blame. I'm not saying these guys are good writers. I don't know. But be consistent in your critical methods.

2. We all felt cheated that Prime didn't show up till the midpoint, and Megatron not until the last few minutes. However, you may THINK you want two hours of robot screen time, but you don't. Do we really want to see Starscream pouting in his bedroom, or Ironhide eating breakfast? All the transformers can't spend all two hours doing big epic things. And for non-action, dramatic scenes? For god's sake, they don't even have moving lips, or facial expressions that the human species are hardwired to respond to on an empathetic level.

Someone has brains enough to understand that we need a human presence. Too many human characters in the first one, yes. Yes, we need more robots, but we need more quality, instead of a five minute scene hiding-in-the-front-yard scene and robot pee pee gags.
