Who's Who in Transformers 2? A Visual Guide
How to tell your Autobots from your Decepticons, plus the new faces of Revenge of the Fallen

This Wednesday, the forces of Michael Bay and Co. return to the multiplex with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which picks up two years after the events of 2007's Transformers. As the humans work in secret with Optimus Prime and a line-up of Autobots to battle the malicious Decepticons that remain hidden on Earth, Sam Witwicky (Shia Labeouf) is gearing up for his own challenge: freshman year at college, where his relationship with girlfriend Mikaela Banes (Megan Fox) must endure its own tests -- namely, an alluring co-ed with her eye on Sam (Isabel Lucas).

To help prep you for the two hour-plus eyeball-searing spectacle that is Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, we've put together a guide to the new and familiar characters who'll pop up in the sequel. (Warning: mild spoilers within.)

-----

THE AUTOBOTS

OPTIMUS PRIME

The wise leader of the Autobots, Optimus Prime has worked with the U.S. military in the years following Transformers to rid Earth of the dangerous Decepticons who remain in hiding, unbeknownst to most humans. As the government grows wary of the Transformers' civil war, Optimus Prime calls upon Sam Witwicky as the Autobots' liason, asking Sam to protect the Autobots -- even if he's not quite ready for the responsibility.

BUMBLEBEE

As Sam's sworn protector and best bot bud, Bumblebee has chosen to live (hidden in Camaro form, of course) in the Witwicky garage in order to stay close -- and his vocal processors are still out of commission. Will Sam leave his sweet ride (and best 'bot friend) behind when he goes off to college?

IRONHIDE

Veteran warrior Ironhide is Optimus Prime's right hand man, a weapons specialist outfitted with over 10,000 individual pieces who transforms into a supercharged GMC truck.

RATCHET

Autobot medic Ratchet (who masquerades as a yellow emergency Hummer) has been working alongside his fellow teammates to battle the Decepticons remaining on earth; his expertise as a field surgeon will be handy in a battle that culminates in the wide, treacherous deserts of Egypt.

Damned spammers. Hate them all.

Cool list, by the way. Look forward to seeing Jetfire and his Pimp Cane on the big screen.

I was hoping for Prowl as well, thought maybe he would take out Barricade, since he is basically a ripoff of Prowl.

I'm irked by this news as well. It's a crime, man. Two Transformers films and no Wheeljack, Prowl, Mirage, or Hound, and then Jazz is trifled with and killed off in the first movie. Now, apparently, Jetfire is being portrayed as some old cain wielding geezer. (sigh)

Makes no sense. We get these idiotic 'Twins' characters when we could have had Cliffjumper (imagine that, a red Bumblebee), and Brawn. What's the point now, one wonders, of even hoping to see someone like UltraMagnus show up in the third film when so far so many signature characters have been foolishly overlooked? What a fu.cking waste.

@Matanuki:
I feel your pain - there are a lot of Transformers characters that I'd have loved to have seen make it to the big screen.

I'm honestly feeling a bit bummed looking at the ever-dropping T-meter on this movie. It was at 30% this morning, and I've seen it drop to 29, 28, 26, and now it's at 25%? When this summer began, I remember McG and Michael Bay having a war of words about who had the better big robots movie, and I thought it'd be a slam-dunk for Bay. I thought the T-meter for this movie was going to be around 50%, so I'm dead shocked to see it below TERMINATOR: SALVATION's.

Saw it already guys, I was disappointed. It just made no ****ing sense, so incoherent, bloated, and over long. It kept introducing new sub plots for nothing- something called "The League of Matrix" or something like that was so stupid. The first 90 minutes ran fine with me, but after that I kept looking at my watch. Really repetitive, and most of the humor is pretty bad. Didn't really laugh at all, those two supposed racist robots were really annoying like most of the side characters (Sam's roommate). I laughed a lot at all the slow motion which was really cheesy on Pearl Harbor level. The last 30 minutes just made no sense with the stupid Maguffin and it was hard to understand what was going on- bad sense of geography. One scene has John Turturro going up to Devastator as if he is going to do something, and then it cuts away and you never know what happens. Also SO anti-climatic. They led up to a battle between Prime and that main Fallen guy and the fight lasted for like 30 seconds!!! It seriously should have cut some side characters/stories to lose 30 minutes.
On the upside the first hour or so were fine kind of fun. The earlier action scenes are really good but after a forrest scene nothing lives up to it. Shia is still good and fun. On a technical level the movie was great. I did my best to enjoy it, I like the first one, but I found myself more so bored during this.
I would say a 5/6

Yeah, this movie is already popping up online, but I for one can't bring myself to watch it, even if it is high quality.

I think its sad that somebody pointed out they thought this movie was going to be good, and they expected at least a 50% on the meter. 50%! I wouldn't waste my time.

I know, you can't solely judge a movie on critics opinions, but this movie is currently at 23% and dropping. This is looking to be like one of the worst rated Bay films, and that's really saying something.

You people need to go make THE HURT LOCKER your 4th of july movie. Just saw it, its effin great.

What better way to contemplate American values than see a movie like this? I give the studios credit for releasing it on the 4th, even though it will inevitably drown in the sea of summer blockbusters, this is easily one of the best movies to come out all year. It might not be Oscar season yet, but this movie is definetly oscar bait.

It was made by Katherin Bigelow, who also directed Point Break, and while this movie does not support a beach bum Keanu Reeves or Garey Busey, it is eaily her best film to date.

@jokerboy1991:
Thanks for the review. I know that you were looking forward to the movie, and I guess the concerns about the running time were dead on, huh? Probably not seeing it until Friday; I'll try to keep my expectations at the absolute bare minimum and enjoy myself.

@CtrlAltDestroy:
I said that I expected it to be around 50% - a little bit lower than the first one. As you probably know, I'm no Bay apologist, and I didn't expect this movie to be an action masterpiece, but I did expect it to be watchable. Oh well - I'll probably enjoy myself at THE HURT LOCKER. That movie looks f'ing awesome.

Real fans of sci fi action cinema, bear down and wait for December 18th. The internet is buzzing about James Cameron screening 24 minutes of AVATAR in Amsterdam. And the reports are MIND-BOGGLING. I quote:

"The audience afterwards was stunned. Everyone just gasped, wondered and just couldnt believe what they saw. [Cameron] is so proud of this movie and still handles it with great suave like he just folded a paper plane. I am just mindbaffled how a genius like that can contain himself with something like this."
