Michael Sheen Cast in Twilight Sequel, New Moon
The British actor to play Aro, leader of the Volturi, in Chris Weitz's take on the Stephenie Meyer novel.

After playing a vampire-slaying werewolf in all three Underworld films, critically acclaimed British actor Michael Sheen is joining the cast of New Moon, the follow-up to 2008's teenage vampire romance, Twilight. Sheen joins American actress Dakota Fanning and Sweeney Todd teen Jamie Campbell Bower as the latest additions to the New Moon cast; all three will portray members of the ancient and deadly Volturi, who appear not only in New Moon but also in subsequent Twilight novels.

Sheen will play Aro, one of the leaders of the powerful Italian coven known as the Volturi, in director Chris Weitz's take on the Stephenie Meyer novel. The casting news comes courtesy of Variety, though the trade does not specify Sheen's role as Aro by name.

Production is already underway in Vancouver on the Twilight sequel, which will see the return of cast members Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson as Bella Swan and Edward Cullen, respectively. Fellow Cullen clan players Nikki Reed, Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Ashley Greene, Kellan Lutz, and Jackson Rathbone are also returning, along with Billy Burke as Bella's father and Taylor Lautner as the Quileute local Jacob, who will play a larger part this time around.

Sheen will reportedly play Aro, who along with fellow ancient vampires Caius and Marcus, leads the powerful Italian coven known as the Volturi. Aro, the assertive leader of the three, is a rare vampire with special powers similar to Edward and Alice, and can read any person's mind through physical contact.

Although the Volturi only appear toward the end of Meyer's New Moon novel, the role of Aro is significant in later installments of the Twilight saga as the Volturi play a larger role in Bella and Edward's lives. As such, the addition of Sheen (and the previously announced Dakota Fanning, who will play Aro's henchwoman, Jane) gives the Twilight sequel -- and by extension, any future films, providing the screen adaptations remain faithful and roles are not recast -- an added credibility boost.

New Moon is due in theaters November 20, 2009.

Oh Lordy. Michael Sheen is on my list of actors, that I'll see any movie if they're in it. So if I put my money where my mouth is, I'll have to see New Moon. And I can't see a sequel without watching the first one.

Oh Lordy.

Aro is a badass. One touch and he can read every thought you've ever had. Scary. Thats a good bit of casting news. I get more and more excited for this movie everyday.

The producers are obviously reaching for some mainstream credibility with the casting of Sheen. Most of the actors in these films are stiff and not big names. Dakota Fanning and Michael Sheen are obvious attempts to try and change that. Sheen has no aversion to doing films such as Twilight (see Underworld) so it will be interesting as to see him chewing scenery in these movies as the bad guy. Regardless of who was cast the fangirls would have ensured that this movie made as much as the previous one (I think they are much more dedicated and ravenous than fanboys), but its nice to see the producers trying somewhat to make this a legitimate film.

I think the additions of Sheen and Fanning are more an indication of the increased budget of the film than anything else. I don't honestly think the casting was that bad to begin with. Yes, Facinelli looked a little off, but I think that was more the make-up than the acting and the supporting Cullens really nailed their roles I thought. Especially Greene who amongst other things is smokin hot. I thought her and Rathbone were really brightspots in their casting and did a good job in their roles.

Pam G, While I completely agree Dakota is creepy as the day is long I think she is perfect for this role. Seriously, who's gonna play creepy blonde unnaturally mature little girl than Dakota Fanning? If you'd told me you had a role for a creepy blonde unnaturally mature little girl I'd have blurted out Dakota Fanning before you got past creepy blonde.
