Consensus: For better or worse, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is every bit as strange and twisted as you'd expect from David Lynch.

A predecessor to that series, FIRE WALK WITH ME recounts the final week in the life of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), a sparkling teenager who finds herself caught up in a seedy underworld and is eventually murdered. As Laura abuses cocaine and performs sexual favors for a series of shady characters, she also must balance her day-to-day affairs, which include a best friend, Donna (Moira Kelly), an ex-boyfriend, James (James Marshall), and her parents, Leland (Ray Wise) and Sarah (Grace Zabriskie). Screenwriters Lynch and Robert Engels raise more questions than they answer, keeping the film's mystery ambiguous even by the film's conclusion. While this will most certainly appeal to die-hard fans of the series, it isn't necessary for the viewer to have any prior knowledge of the characters in order to follow the story line, for Lynch's unique vision is enough to keep audiences engaged even when they aren't able to put the pieces together. Haunting, humorous, and strange, FIRE WALK WITH ME is another work of artistry from the mind of David Lynch. [More]

Reviews for Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me
The film appears to be an undifferentiated mess of story lines and hallucinations. There's no reason to care which is which. Even Mr. Lynch's eccentric touches become boring. The jokes are stillborn.
The ignominious ending to a once-great television phenomenon. Possibly Lynch's worst effort to date.
It works well because Lynch’s nightmarish vision stays true to itself throughout the entire movie and never strays far from its strong central story.
an even more perplexing freak show encircling a small town’s consignment of oddities and inhabitants, and as equally visually transcendent and thematically stunning
Those who have not seen the television series will likely react as television viewers did upon its first airing -- some fascinated and wanting more, and others confused, perplexed, gross-out or uninterested in this strange place and stranger events.
Fabulously color-coded to resemble a dream world, a purgatory consumed by the sadness of blues and the terror of reds.
Lynch plays with multiple dimensions of existence in a way that is both intriguing and pretentious.
If inspiration is lacking, talent is not. Count Lynch down but never out.
Fans who may be looking for clarification of the series, which was vague at best, will be sorely disappointed. In fact, so will fans looking for the atmosphere and satire so prevalent in the series.
Fans of the dark comedy will find little to laugh about -- unless it is Lynch's pretentiousness -- in this horrific look at Laura's last seven days.
