Ulee, a Florida beekeeper, must struggle not only to earn a living, but to keep his two grandchildren from falling into the same self-destructive paths blazed by their parents. With a son in prison and the children's mother having long abandoned the family, he has his work cut out for him. But when he receives news that his daughter-in-law has been found, drugged out and hitting rock bottom, he dutifully shoulders the burden--only to find that in so doing, he has unwittingly opened the door to the world's dark side which he had tried so desperately to keep closed. Fonda won a Golden Globe as Best Actor for his turn as the Zen-like patriarch. Academy Award Nomination: Best Actor--Peter Fonda. [More]

Reviews for Ulee's Gold
A wonderful exercise in restraint — deliberately paced and quiet in a way that seems to elude most contemporary American moviemakers.
A quiet, intelligent film that deserves a place in a market so often filled with sound and fury.
Works well as a realistic look at a family in need of a second chance on life.
The acting styles are well-matched with Nunez's slow, deliberate direction.
Deceptively old-fashioned, this is an emotionally quiet but rewarding portrait of a taciturn beekeeper (marvelously played by Peter Fonda, who resembles his dad) forced to emerged out of his solitary, sheltered life and face his family responsibilities
Shows us how the spiritual practice of compassion opens up this troubled man and puts him on the path of heart.
Nunez's script is thoughtful and intelligent, and it challenges his actors with fully-formed personalities for them to breathe life into...
Every performance in the film is a winner, especially Fonda, who is a surprise in such an understated, quiet role.
Fonda's work and Victor Nuñez's direction shine in this carefully crafted film.
