Consensus: A visual and aural assault on the senses, this vampire-werewolf sequel makes a lot of noise and features a heavy-handed, overly convoluted story.

Runtime: 1 hr 46 mins

Genre: Action/Adventure

The story picks up right where the first UNDERWORLD left off, in the midst of a war between Lycans (werewolves) and vampires, with the gorgeous death-dealer, Selene (Kate Beckinsale), on the run with her vamp-wolf hybrid lover, Michael (Scott Speedman). This go-'round, there are flashbacks to three centuries earlier and the separation of two ultra-bad brothers, one vampire and one Lycan. The Lycan gets locked in a hidden tomb/prison and the feud begins. In the present, the winged vamp brother Marcus (Tony Curran) is determined to find his Lycan sibling and free him, which would wreak unimaginable havoc on the world. Selene's got to stop it, and the result is mayhem, with great gun battles, bashings and hackings, mysterious artifacts, orgies, and sneaking around in the dripping wet crypts and catacombs. Beckinsale looks great with her jet-black hair, skintight leather bodysuit, red lips, and glowing blue eyes. Director Len Wiseman obviously has a great love for this alternate universe; he keeps the action humming, the blood running, and the cast well-stocked with seasoned British actors like Sir Derek Jacobi, Bill Nighy, and Steven Mackintosh. The sex and violence may still be a bit intense for youngsters, but for the vampire crowd, it's a moveable feast of generous, still-twitching proportions. [More]

I can’t even begin to divulge the storyline because it’s mostly unfathomable.

So dedicated to its ludicrously convoluted plot that it takes half an hour to explain what the hell is going on.

Cool, maybe. But it's also utterly stupid

Evolution's action sequences are as horribly bungled as its plot, resulting in a string of repetitive confrontations that feel toothless even by the last movie’s standards.

The murkily atmospheric sets resemble the ruins and prisons of Piranesi.

[Underworld: Evolution is] silly and ... not as good as the first film but at least it has plenty of action in it to keep the Friday night crowd happy.

With Underworld and its sequel Underworld: Evolution, Len Wiseman proves that he's more than capable of giving Uwe Boll a run for his money for the title of World's Worst Living Genre Filmmaker.

Overall, Underworld: Evolution is a vast improvement over its predecessor Underworld (2003), even if it generally suffers from the twin evils of stupidity and seriousness.

An impressive bat-winged vampire king, Kate Beckinsale in skintight pleather, complicated but simpleminded plotting, death by helicopter blade, etc.

Underworld: Evolution is representative of the 'modern' vampire movie -- loud, violent, and raucous.

... a movie that beats you over the head until you -- along with all the fanged and furry beasts of the future -- are senseless.

It never lives up to the potential of its premise about a centuries-old war between rival clans of vampires and werewolves.

As always, Beckinsale remains a beautiful void --one with all the right curves and not a glimmer of personality... a pretty, porcelain nothing.

Underworld: Evolution was a huge step up from the first film. But then again, there wasn't really much room to get any worse.

With leads who strain to manage one facial expression between them, and a cinematographer shooting everything through the same steel-blue filter, Underworld: Evolution is a monotonous barrage of computer-generated fur and fangs.

[nothing] can help a film that has blithely discarded a coherent plot or any sort of logic, internal, external, or even whimsical.

'Evolution' is certainly a bad film, but at least it revels in its badness with a sly smile.

Just how much of the 105-minute running time of Underworld: Evolution, the sequel to the titular 2003 film, is actually a new movie is debatable since a good deal is told in flashback.
