This gripping tragedy, based on the novel by Marcel Aymé, is set in a small French village devastated by World War II. With much of their town destroyed by bombings and fighting, the members of the village are forced to come together to survive, despite mounting tension and violence over the hunt for German collaborators. Jean-Pierre Marielle stars as Archambaud, a middle-class family man who takes a series of villagers into his home. Among them are Watrin (Philippe Noiret) the village high school teacher, local communist party leader Geigneux (Michel Blanc), and his seductive daughter Marie Anne (Florence Darel). The ruins of the town become the stomping grounds for the F.F.I. (French Forces of The Interior) who nightly hunt out villagers known to be war-time German collaborators. But things change when Archambaud knowingly hides Maxine Loin (Gerard Desarthe), a former member of the fascist party, in his home. Gerard Depardieu co-stars as the robust innkeeper Leopold, who refuses to be silenced by the intimidation of the F.F.I. and local police. This grim portrait of post war France, seething with corruption, guilt, and confusion is a remarkable study in hypocrisy and greed. Ultimately, the villagers are ripped apart by violence and corruption and forced to acknowledge the hypocritical and immoral behavior of their own post-fascist regime. [More]
