Director Bryan Singer works so hard at evoking an air of world-weary fatalism that it's a shame to find out, at the end, that the little things -- like characters and story -- don't matter as much as the oh-so-clever denouement.

All the actors nail their parts with ultra-cool finesse, and just listening to Del Toro mumble his lines is worth the cost of the ticket alone. Singer's direction is also completely on target.
